Show UTAH LEGISLATURE. On the 11th inst. Thomas E. Taylor of Salt Lake, was appointed public printer. In the Council, a bill was introduced relating to guardians and wards. In the House Mr. Lyman presented a bill to provide fees for the Secretary of the Territory, in certain cases, and asked that it be read and referred to the committee on judiciary. It was read the first time and, after some discussion, referred as desired. January 15th, the committee, of the Council, on unfinished business reported that A Bill for An Act for the Solemnization of Marriages, A Bill for An Act Amending Sec. 180 of the Civil Practice Act, A Bill for An Act to Amend An Act providing for the Establishment and Support of District Schools, Etc, A Bill for An Act for the Relief of Occupying Claimants of Lands, were held over at the close of last session as unfinished business. In the House after considerable argument, pro and con, on the motion to lay the bill and petition relating to the removal of the political disabilities of women, on the table indefinitely, the motion was put to the House and lost. It was then moved that bill and petition be laid upon the table, with the understanding that it come up when called for. Carried. A petition was presented for the dividing of Sanpete and Sevier counties and the forming of a new county to be called Castle County. Referred to the committee on counties. The two year s report of the Chancellor of the Deseret University (1878-79) was presented, partly read, referred to committee on printing, and 500 copies ordered published. The two year s financial reports of Davis, Morgan and Millard counties were presented. The financial reports of Beaver and Rich counties, for 1878-79, were presented. A bill to establish the validity of divorces, was presented, read and referred to the committees on Judiciary. Meyers? Mesers.? [Messrs.] Penrose, Jaques and Dusenberry were appointed a committee to draft resolutions of respect to the memory of the late Hon. A. P. Rockwood. January 16th, in the House a communication was received from the Auditor of Public Accounts, announcing a vacancy in the office of Recorder of Marks and Brands in consequence of the decease of William Clayton, and asking that the vacancy in be filled as soon as possible as the business of the office was accumulating. The communication was referred to the committee on agriculture, trades and manufactures. In the Council on January 19, 1880, Councilor Fotheringham presented A bill to prohibit and punish the keepers and others of opium smoking houses, which was read and on motion of Councilor Thurber was referred to the committee on judiciary. In the House, Mr. Grover presented the financial report of Juab county. Referred. Mr. Farr presented the petition of Richard Ballantyne and 112 others to prohibit the use of barbed or other wire fences. Referred to the committee on agriculture, etc. Mr. Thompson presented the financial report of Millard county. Referred. Mr. Smith presented A bill for an Act to create San Juan County. Read the first time and referred to the committee on counties. Mr. Farr presented petitions of citizens residing in the northern part of the Third Judicial District, asking that the counties of Cache, Box Elder, Morgan, Rich and Weber be created a Judicial District of the Territory, or that said counties be attached to the first Judicial District. Referred to the committee on Judiciary. Mr. Thompson presented the petition of Nephi Pratt and 100 others asking to amend the charter of Fillmore City, with accompanying bill. Referred to the committee on municipal corporations and townsites. In the House on the 20th, Mr. Peterson presented petition of Warren Penrock and 26 other residents of Castle Valley, Sanpete Co., remonstrating against the creation of a new county out of the eastern part of Sanpete Co.; referred to the committee on counties. |
