Show HYRUM. (From Our Regular Correspondent). Maiden's Surprise and Bachelor's Party. On Tuesday, March 21, the young ladies assembled at the residence of Mrs. Harriet Odorn, ex-president of the Y. L. M. L. A. All were well supplied with good things, and each one brought a present. The lady was the eldest spinster and very much esteemed by the young people. The young men found out what was going on, and they put on their Sunday suits, called at the co-operative store, purchased a valuable present and joined the young ladies in making the company an interesting affair. A sumptuous feast was spread and enjoyed. In the evening the Allen Bros. (Brothers) dancing hall was engaged and dancing commenced at 7 P. M. All the participants were bachelors and spinsters. The members of the band were two thirds of the bachelor persuasion. A splendid evening's enjoyment was had and closed, as customary, with single persons of an uncertain age at an early hour. After an hour spent at the supper table, they dispersed to dream of single blessed ones and the joys that are to come soon. Rifle Practice. The Hyrum Rifle Club met on Saturday last for their weekly practice, and as I did not send you the last score, I shall forward the two this week. Our club have enjoyed ourselves very much during the long winter, and some excellent shooting has been done. On Saturday last three prizes were shot for. So now, gentlemen shootists, if you have an idea that you can shoot better than our old men and boys please hand in your engagements. A Few Bare Spots. At last there are a few bare spots of dry ground here, and they are very few indeed, but the boys and young men make good use of them by exercising their muscles in jumping. Exercise must be good after nearly five months of inactivity. Do you wonder that the boys will be a little unruly at times? Only look at our number! We have from one hundred and fifty to two hundred able bodied young men and big boys who are from five feet nothing to six feet seven inches high and weigh from ninety to two hundred pounds. They are well fed and clothed and have had no employment to speak of since last November. It is a wonder to me that we have so little disorder in our towns and villages, and it is a great credit to the young people. But this will not last forever. The cry is, give us labor all the year around. Ye rich men, hear their cry, and come to their aid. Invest your means with some kind of industry that will employ these boys who are needing to work, and at the same time increase your wealth both on earth and in heaven. How many have found fault at the building of the old mud wall around Salt Lake City, and also could see no use in the old canal that was expected to bring work to the Temple. But the projectors of these works knew that to keep the people employed was the best method of keeping good order, and at the same time keep the hungry wolf away from many a poor man's door. Primary Meeting. At a primary meeting of the people's party, the following gentlemen were elected as delegates from Hyrum to the county convention to elect six delegates to the Territorial convention, viz; James C. McBride, Charles C. Shaw, I. C. Thoresen, Orson Wilson and Andrew Braelsen. |
