(Continued) The man with 'the provisions seemed to be a very liberal man and was not stingy, but was a who souled gentleman, open hearted and full of fun. All felt to bless the man and say God bless you my friend. On Thursday, December 13, we arrived at illiams Ranch where we found brother Rich and brethren, breth-ren, in good quarters, they having secured a room for all hands, with provisions. Colif ornia flour is $12.00 per hundred pounds; beef, on foot, 5 and 6 dollars per head; sugar and coffee 37 cents per pound, fcome men who have just arrived from the mines say that flour is worth; $L 25 per pound; beef, 75 cents per pound; lumber $500.00 per -1000 feet, and; the passage on a7 Vessel' from -Pueblo or Los Angeles, up the coast to San Francisco, $250.00, per trip. Mr. Williams offers to sell his ranch, including stock and all, for 2000.00. He says there are cattle enough belonging to the ranch to pay for it in six' months, at present pres-ent price in the mines, he having forty thousand head of cattle and one thousand head of horses and mules. He wanted to go to the States in the east, to live, and was bound to sell or leave his property in some shape and he told brother Rich that he and his men . could pay for the ranch and all that was on it in less than a year. In a few days Captain Hunt and train arrived. The odometer made the distance from Salt Lake City to the Cajon Pass, 701 miles, and from the pass to ' TPIlliams ranch 21 miles, the total being 722 miles. Wo were detained at Williams ranch for some time in order to secure proper oufitts for the mines, and while there we were overtaken by Captain Howard Egan, with a company from Salt Lake City, all bound for the diggings. Egan had a letter from George A. Smith and E. T. Benson, for brother Rich to "raise five thousand dollars from the boys then enrout for the mines; that they would pray the Lord to lead them to some nook or corner where it lay,"&c. The letter let-ter stated that the cholera was in the States and had killed some of Uncle Sam's fat ones and the president of the United States had issued a proclamation setting apart a day of fasting and pray- |
