In Norf olkshire there is a famous Lime tree measuring 4$ feet. The Washington Elm in Cambridge Cam-bridge measures 25 feet and the Big Elm on Boston Common measures 24 feet. A specie of tree ferns called Al-sophila Al-sophila gigantica is found in the Himalaya, at an elevation of 7000 feet. There is a plank taken from one of the large trees of California called "Mammoth Redwood" plank. This plank was cut in June 1890 in Humbolt county, California, Califor-nia, for exhibition at the World's Fair. The great tree from which the plank was hewn Was 35 feet in diameter, when standing, and was supposed to have reached the patriarchal patri-archal age of 1500 years. A part of one side of the tree had decayed decay-ed and after it had been felled, in burning, up the surrounding brush, still more of the tree was distroyd, by fire, so that the width of the plank represents less than half of the original diameter of the tree. The entire height of the tree was 300 feet; the plank being cut 'from a section of the trunk 28 feet from the ground, This plank is the largest in the world; its dimensions di-mensions being as follows: 16 feet 5 inches wide, 12 ft. 9 inches long, and 5 inches thick. It is highly improbable if a tree will ever be found that will yield a larger plank. So that the mammoth pieces of timber here discrifbed may certainly certain-ly be termed the "sight of a life time." Prairie Flower. i -' ii . O ii .i |
