Show COOPERATING TO BOOST HIGHWAY A Y 40 Enthusiasm and the spirit of close cooperation I Ivere were vere the keynotes of the recent meeting in Craig Colorado at which h representatives of towns to of Highway Highway High High- way ay 40 got together to finish plans for an intensive publicity campaign to be carried on in the interests of tourist travel over this highway high Real appreciation appreciation- of the fine work vork done don by the Utah section in this direction last year was vas expressed I by the Colorado representatives who vho admitted that though they had tried hard their efforts had fallen short of the results obtained on the Utah end They are determined to see that their end of the work vork is not slighted in any way vay this year Particularly fine from the newspaperman's ne point of view vie view was vas the action taken to assure that all work vork to be done for the association should be done so far as possible by printers along the highway high Great value to the highway high in free flee and unsolicited publicity from om the v weekly ekly papers was vas recognized by the representatives tives present and a resolution adopted that only those papers would be allowed ved to bid on maps and other advertising advertising advertising ad ad- material ate rial to be printed While hile a good goad many shops will vill bid on the work vork and yet not be successful in getting it this desire to give them the breaks will vill certainly lead the papers all along highway 40 between bet Denver and Salt Lake City to doing all in in their power ver to continue their then support of the campaign Similar support is rs due of course from everyone I whose home business or of property is situated close to highway high 40 Tourist travel is is today redoY one of the greatest great great- est businesses and the amount of it directed over any particular route has a direct effect on the business along that route regardless of the nature natal e of the busi busi- ness And where business is affected either for good or bad all Pr property oper tY values fl fluctuate with it either u up P or down do More travel means more business and more business means better property values and better times for everyone EQUAL OPPORTUNITY FOR EDUCATION Direct benefits to be derived from the U Uniform school f fund nd which ti was vas created Bated b by Y a narrow v margin malgin at the election electron polls last fall were vere one of the main topics of discussion this w week eek at a joint meeting of the Duchesne Duchesne Duchesne Du Du- chesne and Uintah count county y boards of education with State Superintendent Charles H. H Skidmore and J J. J E. E of the s state tote office While Duche Duchesne sae and Uintah counties because of comparatively low lov assessed valuations will vill contribute only a small amount l of this fund they ey are lined fined up among the heaviest beneficiaries on a student per capita basis Though the fund is sin small all this year in comparison to what it should be in future years it will viti still mean several thousand dollars to each of the two VO school districts money which so far fan as D Duchesne county is concerned is sorely needed to build up what would otherwise vise have been a serious deficiency in in this years year's budget because of low v tax collections More and more is the state becoming conscious of the great inequality i in n educational opportunities in in the various parts of the state And Aud as this inequality is is recognized more efforts are bean being g made t to o offset it but to date even with the new v uniform fund in operation opera opera- a- a tion the goal is far from being reached More of this inequality might have been over over- I come if the Uintah h Basin Junior college bill had been signed by the governor and fun funds s appropriated for construction and maintenance Instead however vever the bill was vas vetoed and future prospects are probably largely in the hands of a committee which will vill soon be appointed to study the entire educational system of the state Two vo of this committee are to be be selected from the fourth judicial district comprising Utah Wasatch Duchesne and Uintah counties Perhaps the greatest job before the Basin right now no is to see that it is represented represented represented rep rep- rep rep- resented with at least one member on this committee Appointees to the committee cannot be connected with the school system but there are many capable Basin citizens not so connected who vho understand and appreciate appreciate crate the value of education and vl who know v the problems lems s of the Basin Such a person on on the committee could do much in protecting the Basins Basin's interests in inthe inthe inthe the study and we ve should all lend our wholehearted support for forr such an appointment |
