Show I "SALT LAKE KID." John Tlomnoy is tho true name of "Tho Salt Lake Kid." Whether he is related to the family of that name here Is uncertain, but at any rate ho halls from this city, according to his own statements. John is in jail In Butte, serving out a sentence for acquiring too much red liquor. Romnoy gambles for a living, and would rather play than eat. A short time ago ho was hungry and struck a partner for the price of a "square." Tho man gave him a dime. Now a dime doesn't get a man much in Butte. Ho might as well bo broke. Tho kid thought so at any rate so he bled himself him-self to a gambling joint and bought a white chip. Ho won ten bucks at craps, ato a good meal and tackled the faro layout. In exactly thirteen hours ho was that many thousands to the good, winning a thousand an hour. Romnoy arrayed himself in purple and fine linen, bought diamonds and wont tho pace for a time. But his good luck had deserted him and ho was down at the heel in a short time. In drowning his sorrows in the flowing bowl ho wont flat broke and when arraigned ar-raigned before tho police magistrate was fain to plead for mercy. But the court was obdurate. Ho said it was easier to win $111,000 from a faro dealer deal-er than it was to talk that court out of $5, so "Tho Salt Lake Kid" had to go to jail and work out his sentence. |
