Show S3 TRUTHS. J The Tribune's great sensation (?) V about the tax books has flattened out L to nothing. It was only sprung to 11- 1 vert the attention of the public from 1 tho police and city treasurer scandals. The promised further revelations re-k.irdluj; re-k.irdluj; the tax books have not ap-jj ap-jj peared. I Wm. J. Lunch Is made tho subject ) of tho . Tribune's virulent attacks In I pursuance of a threat that was made j to punish Mr. Lynch for daring to ar- i rest a certain man who was implicatea j In tho Porland fair irregularities and who atterwards fled to Canada, John Q. Cannon. The Tribune don't like people who are honest and decent. This is no figure of speech. It's cold fact, but tho Trlbuno can't help It. Such Is the nature of tho man who owns the sheet and of courso tho sheet pailakes of the nature of its owner. Because of its antipathy to honest folks it has ) ade Sheriff Emery an especial subject sub-ject of attack during this political I campaign. It hasn't hurt Mr. Emery. I In fact most peoplo think it has helped him in his candidacy for re- ft. Tho Tribune is trying to force the Mormon church to get In politics; to do the very thing It Is blaming tho murch for doing. J & Senators Sutherland and Smoot in their great speeches In the Salt Lake theatre told a great many facts about I tho local political situation with par- " nlar repard to the reason why tho "American" party was formed and exists. ex-ists. In both addresses there Is, how-over, how-over, very little to bo found that Truth has not published many times during tho past fow years an Truti f was tho only paper that iU ed to publish those facts. If Chief of Police Sheets was In as i favorable a position now as he was when ho caused the defeat of Arthur Barnes for mayor of Salt Lake, the "American" party would havo easy sailing. The advance ln-house rents Is largely large-ly duo to tho raise in tho taxes which havo been made by tho city administration. adminis-tration. If tho "Americans" capture tho county there will bo a further raise In taxes and a further advance in rents. Houses which now rent for $15 and $20 will go up to $20 and $25 to meet tho tax raise. Tho Trlbuno exhibits a wonderful miount of veneration for the late President Snow. Rats- C. FRANK EMERY Sheriff of Salt Lake County election. In tho courso of his duties as sheriff he found it necessary to arrest ar-rest a number of law breakers such as Jim Donelson, and others who were especial favorites and under tho protection pro-tection of their organ, tho Tribune, and Its gang, henco tho Tribune's dislike dis-like of him. Mr. Emery has been a faithful, honest hon-est and efficient officer. His department depart-ment has been conducted with the utmost integrity. Tho peoplo havo confidence in him and we bellevo will show their faith by re-electing him. The exposures In tho police department depart-ment and tho office of tho city treasurer treas-urer Is a sample of what Is going on In almost every department of tho city government, and In tho city council. Tho proposed amendment to the state constitution abolishing tho tax on mortgages has been given but slight attention by tho press. As the law stands now the tax is a detriment and tends to keep money out of tho state. Tho lender does not pay the tax, on the contrary, it Is charged up to the borrower, who Is thus mado to pay a doublo tax, one on tho property he mortgages and ono on tho money he borrows. Another defect in tho law Is that a lender who resides outside of Continued on Pago 11. Additional Truths. The same kind of a law existed ex-isted in a good many other states, but I it was found to bo unjust and in most yk of them has been repealed. Voters " should voto "yes" on the question of changing tho system. Brlant S. Young withdrew from the republican ticket and William McMll iU. J u- Eldredge, Jr., is ono of tho best known men in public life in Salt Lake. Ho Is not only well known, but favorably known, known for his ability, abil-ity, straighforwardness, reliability and honesty, qualities which count for all that makes llfo worth living. Ho has ( hold several public offices and has t filled them with moro than credit to, Ian has taken his place as candidate for tho lower house of tho legislature. fr iV'cMlllan Is a very capable man and adds strength to tho ticket. Mr. Kearns and Mr. Cannon think M t thoy aro Just whooping things up by issuing challenges for impossible debates de-bates under impossible candltlons. Anybody who would meet cither of them In debate would show a lack of self respect. Harry Joseph was In tho legislature two years ago and proved himself ablo and energetic. It would bo a good plan to send him back. Fancy debating with Mr. Cannon on tho question of whether ho lied or not! It's too absurd for a moment's consideration. I n ,v J. U. UXDK&uGE, JR.. Republican Candidate for County Clerk himself and to tho advantage of tho public. Ho has been county clerk for two years and is a candidate on the republican ticket for re-election.
