H Speaker Cannon, of the House of M Representatives, writes a very ille- fl giblc hand, and when a member of fl Congress received a letter from the fl Speaker one day he was able to read 1 but a single word, He disliked to M bother Mr. Cannon, so he went to 1 several friends among the Congress- H men, and finally the letter, except H for one word, was made out. M This word seemed very important, M as it was underlined, but as neither M the congressman nor his friends could M make it out he thought he would con- M suit Mr. Cannon himself. He told the M Speaker of his trouble in reading the H letter, and explained that with help M from several other members of the M House he had made out all but the H word in question. M Cannon looked at his lettei, and M then at the congressman, and then fl again at the letter, his face mean- fl while taking on a peculiar expression.
