Show truck driver killed in crash on dugway I 1 highway n nigh way DEFECTIVE BRAKES BELIEVED CAUSE OF DEATH PLUNGE OF BIG TRUCK crushed to death when the 20 ton truck he was driving plunged over the side of the road near willow springs overturned one and one half times and came to rest on top of him james E williams 35 south state street salt lake city became the traffic fatality in tooele thoele county this year cause of the accident was believed to be ex speed apparently due to failure of air brakes to function the huge truck loaded with tons of cement slid over a hundred feet before it went off the road C crashed rashed through a fence snapping kofl a por ji 1 tia tw t ia a creek fed bed then overturned when it hit a large dam built across the stream bed loss ol 01 20 sacks of cement and debris was scattered 75 feet from the vehicle and the battery was thrown ap proximately 40 feet from the truck the giant ten wheeler was own ed by ashworth transfer company of salt lake and was almost a complete loss damage rated at 20 goo the bed of the truck was sheared oft off and the cab and front of the truck completely demolish ed the vehicle was feet from where it left the road scene of the tragedy was at wil low springs on the dugway high way 32 miles southwest of tooele thoele the wreck was discovered by F M st jeor and A B macan macari of the county road commission who no iced the truck as they were re turning from dugway they incesti gated and could not see anybody in the truck at first but upon clos er examination discovered the dead driver under the wreck mr S jeor remained at the scene and mr macan macari went to clover 8 3 miles milel away and telephoned the tooele thoele county sheriff deputies gillette and carson were dispatched to the scene and jack clarke local gar age owner brought his tow truck and acetylene outfit to cut the victim out of the truck brakes failed western chemical center also sent their ambulance and a doc tor along with several men to as in righting the vehicle but it was immovable until two trucks were hooked onto it then it was turned partially over and blocked up until the body could be cut out the whole process from discovery of the wreck to the remodel of the victim took 2 hours it was dincov ered about 11 a in and the officers s were able to get there by 12 0 00 0 noon investigating officers officer s fay gill lette and clifford carson believed that the brakes failed to hold the huge load on the steep downgrade de and the driver was unable to ne the sharp curve at willow springs ranch he died instantly mr williams had been driving trucks for 17 ye years ars but had only been employed by the ashworth company for a short while survivors listed bom born in ark arkansas ansas june 21 1913 he was a son of E T and ola knight will ams buckeye anz ariz he came to salt lake city from tuc and was em son in sept 1947 aloyed by ashworth transfer co S 2nd west he was a member of 10 OF 0 F and the masonic lodge at glendale anz ariz mr williams married mary aph ilia cooper in las cruces N M jun june e 6 1941 their home is at logo 1090 S state besides his widow survivors include five sons william darrell charles dale dal e james ed ward michael wayne and victor tyrone williams a daughter pat ricia elaine williams william s salt lake city five brothers lewis williams long cong beach cal sid wilham william bill and 11 D williams buckeye and jack williams in the south pacific and two sisters frances faye hodge lodge B buckeye and mary belle hightower washington funeral services and burial will be to in buckeye |
