Show ou how to make new friends we had just moved into a new house in a new neighborhood in a new town a little western city without any of the advantages of 9 41 more mor e erudite community the se sec c ond day we were there she came bearing gifts a glass of jelly she had made from wild chokecherries choke chernes the autumn before she was just a little country woman she had always lived there she hadn haan t ever been more than fifty miles from home bad had never seen a railroad train or an airplane had been only once to the movies but I 1 never met one of more cos mo politan personality of broader vision or of more supreme happi ness you couldn coulden t be with her for more than an hour without catching I 1 the spirit of her infectious laugh of 0 her rare and rollicking good humor or some of the spirit of her amazing charm yet she was a woman who had lived all her life without addan one evening as we sat on the porch I 1 questioned her closely about her philosophy of life and the gene sis of her personality and I 1 believe that what she told me will go with me as a source of inspiration and help as long as I 1 live I 1 also believe it may likewise help you all her life she has merely made it a point to make a new friend of every new person who moves into the community it was the reflection of or her her friendship toward others that made her eyes shine her conversa tion sparkle with good fellowship and the humor that endeared her to everyone within a radius of a hun dred miles she drew you like a magnet her charm was ir resist ible and all she had done was to make a new driendl 1 I suppose in her life that some persons had taken advantage of her friendship I 1 suppose she had been cheated and robbed as I 1 have as you have maybe you and I 1 have be come a little bit embittered because of it not she she found the new friends she won outweighed the loss of those who were faithless to her trust if you will assume that everyone is your friend and try to make new social contacts every day it wil wll do some mysterious and very good thin things 9 s to your personality it will make your personality warm and friendly and will draw persons to you fron walk of life far yar better than any academic rules of psychology is the simple rule of the mountain woman which I 1 learned as dusk fell and the th rab bits came out to play if you want friends you have to show folks you are a friend I 1 guess that is all there Is to it |
