Show archibald bevan son of thoele s first settlers tells story of his life archibald archibal bevan born september 8 1868 was the son of james and mary shields bevan father was a member of the mor mon battal on and arrived in salt lake valley just three days after the first company of pioneers und er the leadership of brigham young mother died when I 1 was six years of age I 1 went to live with my brother john A bevan attended the public schools and then went to provo as a student of the B Y U graduating from that school in 1891 As already stated father was a member of the mor mon battalion and arrived in the salt lake valley july 27 1847 one hundred years ago he stayed in the valley that winter then went back to the missouri river where he met the shields family he mar ned ried the daughter mary shields my oldest brother john A bevan was born at winter quarters neb near council bluffs he came across the plains again and cocat ed in tooele thoele in 1852 they lived at the mouth of settlement canyon then moved to the present site our home was where the county court house now stands my first job was for uncle tom lee at the mill pond he then owned and operated a saw m 11 1 I carried the boards from the saw also helped him on the dry f farm arm which was on the bench above the mill pond I 1 milked a bout a dozen cows night and morn ing driving them to t the he pasture in the morning and bringing them back at night I 1 then carried mail between stockton and vernon all one summer horseback staying four nights in st john and three nights of the week in vernon rode about 3 miles sp Spent two win on grass mt herding sheep made a trip to deep creek with N A scribner and drove sheep camp across the desert to his ranch in skull valley taught school for six years in elsmore elsinore sevier county levan juab county two years lake view and tooele thoele city too ele county on july 20 1893 1 I was called by president wilford woodruff to go on a mission to the southern states I 1 left salt lake city in september and visited the world fair in irr chicago go gong ng from there to chattanooga tennessee we were met by george albert smith now president of the L D S church who was then clerk of the southern mission he showed us the sights he took too k us up by tram line to the top of lookout mt where the battle above the clouds was fought during the chiv il 11 war he and the other three eld ers and I 1 had our pictures taken on umbrella rock on top of look out mt showing the moccasin bend in the tennessee in the back ground I 1 was assigned to labor in ken tucky and spent two years there becoming president of the mission during the latter part of my mis sion summary ol 01 mission walked about miles total of miles travelled meetings held tracts distributed baptized one person assisted in confirming 13 persons assisted in blessing 5 children canvassed five counties and 3 large cities travelled with six companions in 1898 1 I was elected county school superintendent of schools which caused me to cease teaching I 1 purchased a half interest in the crystal drug store the other half being owned by dr lusk who would manage the store while I 1 was visiting the schools of the county after about 2 and one half lf years vears dr lusk then sold his in terest in the drug store to dr F M davis about two years later I 1 bought dr davis interest which gave me ownership of the entire crystal drug store I 1 was then in the old coop building now tooele thoele drug about 43 years ago I 1 burch ased from john C sharp the ground on which the crystal drug store now stands and built a one room and one story brick building after wards adding a second story then later on an addition to the west end at the present time I 1 have been in the drug business 48 and a half years I 1 was appointed by governor mabey a member of the state board of pharmacy and held that position for 19 years I 1 fin dished a course in pharmacy at the highland park college in des moines iowa in 1906 I 1 was elected mayor of tooele thoele city the first time in november 1903 and again in nov 1929 1 I was elected to a four year term in the legislature in 1917 while mayor of tooele thoele city the second time the paving on main and vine streets was laid in sept 1930 the natural gas service was completed more than peo P pie ae participated in the celebration held on phipps lot back of the present site of the post office the following is an excerpt taken from the newspaper regarding rek arding the cele bradon with the lighting of a large flare the advent of natural gas into this city was observed on monday evening the flare was touched off by mayor archibald bevan who also delivered the prin cipal address of the evening ap proximately persons attended the other speakers were C bardwell assistant general super in of the intermountain smelting company R roy oy bently vice ice president of the tooele thoele lions club and L D simmons director of publicity and advertising for the I 1 gas company mr simmons pointed out that tooele thoele was the first city in the state to grant a natural gas franchise the following letter was read later salt lake city utah mayor archibald bevan tooele thoele utah dear mayor your hearty welcome to natural gas as expressed to the large group of interested listeners at the tooele thoele celebration last monday ev ening as well as your past cooper aaion is deeply appreciated the management is not ful of the fact that tooele thoele was the first city in utah to grant a nat ural gas franchise and extend an invitation to this new public ser vice it is a pleasure to be identified with such a progressive community and community leaders who have contributed to this progress we predict that continued
