PG Kickers Set to Boot in Another Girls' Soccer Season by Dean Von Memmott In the late afternoon sun on Aug. 5, the Pleasant Grove Viking girls' soccer team members spent their last ses sion of two-a-da- y practicing on Viking Stadium's Astroturf field. Mentoring them was Head Coach Caitlyn Young, back for her second season. Having played for the Mountain View Bruins several years ago, she had accumu-lated much coaching experi-ence through skippering club teams. During a brief break at the practice, she talked a little bit about this year's squad. She said, "Seventy girls came out for tryouts. We kept 40 of them. Many of them are experienced ju-niors. Though we have not elected any team captains yet, we do have two experi-enced seniors: Brittani John-son and Lydia Anderson. "What I was pleased about the girls that we kept was their individual skills. Passing is their strongest skill." Young has two assistants this year: Danni Ward and Mark Stansfield. Stansfield works with the team's goalies. Ward helps Young with the varsity and jayvees. When Young took over the program last year, she posted a 2-- 2 preseason record and guided the girls through a re-ally rough Region 4. Because it had really strong teams like the Brighton Bengals, Alta Hawks, and Lone Peak Knights, the Vikings didn't make the state playoffs. The new region Pleasant Grove is in promises to be re-ally tough. It has powerhouses like the Riverton, Bingham, Lehi, Lone Peak, and Ameri-can Fork. Young said, "We expect to have a really tough game against Lone Peak later this month." - 1 v ' 7 , . :J U - i. - ...J- M il ; .1 Lindon Days street bike racers from last year's Criterium. PG Lacrosse Brings Home Utah Valley Championship Trophy On Saturday morning Pleasant Grove 2 met Mapleton 1 in the finals of the Utah Valley Lacrosse 7th8th Grade Cham-pionship. The result ended with PG2 steam-rollin- g a strong Maple-to- n 1 team by a score of 1 ending the season with a 10-- 2 record. Both teams started strong and the first quarter ended 4-- 3 with PG2 holding a tight one goal advantage over Mapleton 1 as both teams tried to force their game plan. How-ever; behind a solid defen-sive stand consisting of Zach Carter (goalie) and defensive players Tyler O' Laughlin, Ben Lee and Brek Hall, PG2 shut-out Mapleton for the remain-der of the game. In doing so, they held Mapleton 1 to their lowest offensive output of the season. Meanwhile, PG2 put on an offensive show in the second quarter by scoring a quick four unanswered goals using a fast breaking offense led by Chad Renslow, Ty Gassman, Ethan Hollis and Ryan Robley, putting PG2 up 8-- 3 at halftime. PG 2 added three more goals in the second half to seal the game with a final score of 1 3. To make the single elimi-nation tournament finals, PG2 beat American Fork and Maple-ton 2 handily in the preliminary rounds only to meet up with a very strong 8-- 1 PG1 in the semi-final- s. PG2 pulled away in the final minutes after a very hard fought game. The semi-fin- al game between PG2 and PG1 was much tighter than the final score of 1 to 8 indicated. Ma-pleton beat Provo and Span-ish Fork in the tourney to gain a shot at PG 2 in the Finals.
