Speaking at the 1970 Women's Leadership Lead-ership School on the USU campus in Logan, she said, "Most of the movements to help consumers have really become prevalent during this period. The movements have been aimed to protect consumers from fraud, keep honest merchants in line, keep advertising in check, develop more crusaders for the movement who are involved in-volved enough in the problems pro-blems to make themselves heard and help the consumers con-sumers to weigh certain values and not just consider consi-der things all black or white." She indicated these eight buying practices that alert consumers can use to get the most value for their money spent: (1) Buy from a reliable businessman business-man ; make comparisons to determine quality and dependability of a store or product. (2) don't shop for price alone. Determine how you will use the item and its special features and how they will work best for you. Then determine deter-mine if the cost is worth these. (3) Read advertisements carefully. Consider if you can actually save by buying buy-ing certain sale bargains. (4) Learn to recognize an honest bargain ... If you need it and can use it, it is a bargain. Remember to consider how the product pro-duct will perform. (5) Beware Be-ware of bargains. Something Some-thing may be a bargain for another person but not for you. (6) Take contracts seriously. seri-ously. Read them, read all copies. Don't settle for oral or-al agreements. Know what you are signing. (7) Get guarantees and warranties warran-ties in writing and read them. Ask pertinent questions ques-tions before buying and understand all terms. (8) Learn the Consumer Vocabulary: Vo-cabulary: Free, ficticious pre - ticketing, discount, wholesale, referral selling plan, earn money at home, bait and switch, holder in due course, ricission are terms to know. |
