Show budget hearing Monday Residents interested in how Grand County spends its money during the coming year should take notice of the annual budget hearing, which is scheduled for next Monday at 10 a.m. The budget is up from last year, as are most governmental budgets across the state. And, as is usually us-ually the case, there are sorre budget categories which might to some degree be classified as controversial. All in all, we feel that governing officers have done a good job in preparing the new budget. Increases Increas-es in most nstances are modest; and where they are substantial, there are good reasons for those increases. increas-es. Grand County's relative ranking,' however, makes it imperative that spending be closely analyzed. According to a recent report from the Utah Taxpayers Tax-payers Association, using figures compiled by the State Tax Commission, Grand County's ranking among the state's 29 counties in per capita 'costs in property tax is third. With per capita taxation (via the property tax route) standing at $43.97 last year, only two coun-tes coun-tes are higher: San Juan and Daggett. Costs in Salt Lake County, for comparison purposes, are $26.96. Attending the budget hearing without previously analyzing the proposals is preltty much a waste of time. But a little time spent with a proposed budget before hand, will give those attendng a much better understanding under-standing of what is happening on Monday; as well as a basis for knowledgeable disagreement, if that is the desire. |
