Show Summer Recreation Program Involves 100's Summer recreation in Moab Mo-ab is a big undertaking. The program offers swimming lessons, life saving, tennis, golf, and baseball to approximately approx-imately 550 children in the community. The program, with the largest lar-gest participation in baseball base-ball with around 300 boys, ages 8 through 14 involved, includes six T-League teams for 8 and 9 year old boys; nine little league teams involving in-volving boys between 10 and 12; and 4 pony league teams for 13 and 14 year olds. Most of the children participating in the various programs are between the ages of 6 and 14. Glen Richeson, the high school football coach, is director dir-ector of the summer recreation recre-ation program, aided by Mrs. Ralph Osborne and Bill Bacon, the new Dasketbail coach for the Junior High school; Mrs. Charles Brech-tel Brech-tel and Jim Markle in the swimming program. Corky Garner manages the pony league portion of the baseball program, as well as the men's Softball league. Golf, with 30 young people registered, is taught by local lo-cal golf pro, Glenn Victor; and tennis is under the direction dir-ection of Bill Bacon with 20 participatnig. Steve Ro'r inson, a senior in high school this fall, is in charge of the grounds and helps umpire ball games. Several other high school students also help with umpiring. Ben Davidson Da-vidson is chief umpire in the little league program. The program operates on a budget of approximately $12,000 a year, wth funds being be-ing supplied jointly by the county, city, and school district. dis-trict. Grand County earmarks ear-marks $7,000; Moab City, $2,000 and the Grand County School District, $1,500. The balance comes from regis-traton regis-traton fees. The Moab Recreation Board is headed by J. W. Holland. Members are Mrs. Ed Toni-sic Toni-sic of the school board; J. W. West from the City Council; Coun-cil; and Commissioners, R. J. Miller and Mars Pope for Grand County. They oversee the entire recreation pro- gram, which also includes the rodeo, and support of Moab Museum. The county appropriates an additional $2,000 to operate these two. |
