Show Burton Announces Delay !n Launch Center Program The Department of the Air Force informed Rep. Laurence Laur-ence J. Burton ( R-Utah ) Thursday that the Green River, Ri-ver, Utah launch center would resume operation in late March rather than this month as had been previously prev-iously announced. An Air Force spokesman told the Utah Republican that an official release from the Dept. of Defense issued is-sued last year said the Green River operation would get underway in January, but now they have been delayed. "I am disappointed that the operations at Green River won't begin for another two imontfis, "Rep. Burton said, "I was hopeful that the installation in-stallation would begin its activity this month, but in yiew of current cutback in milssile operations across the nation I still am pleased that our Green River site has not been out altogether. Burton was informed that some thirty-five persons at the Green River base are prepared to ready the two missile launchers in March. "A third missle launcher ha9 been put in storage," Burton went on, but can be reactivated in a short period of time if necessary. Because of the deactivation deactiva-tion of the third launcher some reduction of personnel was necessary, but I am happy to report that some of the personnel stayed in Utah at other installations and some left for defense work in California." The congressman said the Green River installation was important to Utah economy as well as to acivities in missile and space areas. "While I was hoping there would be full scale operations opera-tions this month" Burton added"I am looking forward to resumption of activity in March." |
