Show Garn Anti-Gun Control Amendment Passed, Moves on to House An anti-gun control amendment amend-ment which had the backing and co-sponsorship of U,S.' Sen. Jake Garn (R-Ut.) recently recent-ly passed the Senate by voice vote. Garn said the amendment amend-ment will prevent the proposed pro-posed new Agency for Consumer Con-sumer Advocacy from intervening inter-vening in matters that concern , the manufacture, sale or possession of firearms or firearm ammunition. "I am very pleased that this amendment passed and, in effect, closed the door to prevent gun control advocates from using a new agency to foster their plan," Garn said. "They know that they aren't going to have any success getting gun control legislation through the Congress, so they are going to try and do it through agencies. They attempted at-tempted to get the Consumer Product Safety Commission to outlaw the sale of ammunition, and failed. This mendment now prevents inem from attempting to do anything similar with this new agency. "The amendment denies the agency the authority to intervene in matters that Concern the manufacture, sale r - " " or possession of firearms and ammunition and clearly sets forth the definition of firearms and ammunition so the intent of Congress will be unmis take-able. take-able. "1 am pleased the amendment amend-ment passed for another reason," Garn continued. "It gives me another opportunity to state my position on gun control. People from Utah, and in fact from many other states of the union, are condnuing to write and call my office, urging my opposition to gun control laws. I will say again as I have said many times in the past, that I am, and will remain, definitely and adamantly ada-mantly opposed to any national na-tional gun control laws and any effort, .regardless of how insignificant it might seem, to bring such laws into existence. I have co-sponsored every bill or amendment in opposition to gun control that has come before the 94th Congress and I will add my support to any others that may come before us." Senator James McClure (R-Ida.) was the primary sponsor of the amendment which passed the Senate. |
