Mr. B. E. Grant, Chairman of the Board of Peabody Coal Company. editorial kids need lobs. . . Today, more than in any other period ofour histo:, tin i is a generation gap; there is an inclination to criticize; there is. in many instances, complete misunderstanding. The young men and women who roam the streets when schools are closed during the summer months often do so because they cannot find jobs. True, they arc usually unskilled; they may speak a language strange to most of us; but, most arc willing to learn and work. This summer more than 13.5 million young people will seek employment. If our experience of the last scvcrnl years holds, about 2 million of these youths will hunt in vain for jobs. These 2,000,000. will probably need jobs the most. They will need them for important work experience, to enrn money to return to school this fall, or just simply to keep body and soul together. Wc must do more so that these young people will not fail In their quest for work. Look around and you'll find a job where you can employ a girl or a boy. In doing this you not only keep a young person off the street and possibly out of serious mischief but you help him develop work habits, an appreciation of earning his own money, pride in doing a job well, and a sense of rcsponsiblity and independence. That's for him. For yourself, you're building a potential full-time employee; you're investing in the future; you're helping yourself to our greatest resource youth power. Summer Jobs for Youth is one avenue on which the citirns of tixlay and the citizens of tomorrow can go forward together with heads held high and with mutual understanding. For information on hiring these young men nnd women, contact Mrs.Dailcy at the Frnployment Security Office in Moab. |
