Moab Shoots Down Richfield Wildcats by 21 to 6 Moab thoroughly dominated a pass minded Richfield Wildcat team for all but sixty . seconds Friday, to easily notch their second Region Seven triumph by 21-6 and enthuse a good crowd out for the opening home game of the season. Hard running Jay Johnson had a great game with two touchdowns and was a constant con-stant threat inside and out against the larger Wildcats. ' Johnson scored on runs of seven and 23 yards. When he wasn't intimidating the Wildcats, Wild-cats, speedy Don Flynn and slashing Randy Stubblefield gave the Wildcats still more than they could handle. The Devil defense of Trent Garcia, Todd Zimmerman, Iley .Cop.eJand v Leonard Hqrtpn,. tfe'ff ' Me'ad'6r,'"Mike Zimmerman Zimmer-man and Nick Chavez meanwhile mean-while bottled ud Richfield inside their own territory except for one long touchdown pass. Opening Jitters Moab sputtered offensively in the opening minutes with penalties cutting into some otherwise well executed plays. It took a broken play by young quarterback Greg Larsen to ignite the Devils. Larsen went back to pass, couldn't find anybody open and picked his way downfield for 24 yards to the Wildcat 26 yard line. Don Flynn then exploded to the seven yard line and Jay Johnson scooted in from there. Randy Stubblefield charged through for a two point conversion and an 8-0 lead. Richfield in the meantime filled the air with the football, but got nothing but air for their efforts. The Wildcats in one stretch went to the. air eleven straight ''time's'' With' no' completions. It wasn't dull. Wildcat quarterback Steve Shiner was either near or deserted by his receivers enough times to keep the crowd apprehensive. Shiner threw 31 times in all, completed nine and got the only Wildcat score on a 63 yarder to Mike Petersen with 2:58 in the fourth quarter remaining. That was the only important completion as Jeff Meador and Mike Zimmerman twice dumped pass receivers for substantial losses. Moab's second touchdown ' came from tough pressure. Nick Chavez with a diving catch and then a long punt return set it up. The Devils worked to the Wildcat 23 yard line and Johnson romped home. The conversion failed. So too did a Jay Bohn field goal a minute later. Bohn hit the cross bar with a 28 yard shot and the ball came back, but barely. Second Half Moab's The second half was equally Moab's. Shiner's constant passing and several breaks still left the Wildcats on the short end and the Moab defense was relentless. Shiner had the protection to throw and throw he did. Leonard Horton was the only Devil to put the sack on the Wildcat QB and the play took a lot of steam out of Richfield. Moab's final score went to hard working Randy Stubblefield. Stubble-field. The Devil fullback carried four straight times averaging eight yards a try to set things up. With the Wildcats bunched to stop ' those charges, Larsen lofteda "pass to Don Flynn on the Richfield one yard line and Stubblefield got a well deserved deserv-ed score by slamming through, standing up for the finale. Bohn was perfect with the PAT and Moab had its third region win. JV Won Opener The Moab Junior Varsity, playing in their first encounter of the season Tuesday at Blanding, brought home a 12-0 victory.
