Show U. S. Dist. Court Upholds Decision on Steen Matter A U.S. District Court Judge in Reno ruled on Nov. 20 to uphold the decision de-cision of a bankruptcy referee declaring Charles Steen bankrupt. The decision, by Judge Bruce Thompson, is another step in a 5-year legal battle during which Steen has attempted to show that he has sufficient suffi-cient assets to meet the indebtedness of his estate. At this point, he has 30 days to appeal the judgment judg-ment the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco, just one step below the Supreme Court. The adjudication of bankruptcy bank-ruptcy was made March 20 of this year by fed- ; eral referee Robert Woodward, Sacramento, who said at the time he didn't see how Steen . could meet his debts, especially with an Internal Inter-nal Revenue claim against him for $1.3 million. During the summer, Judge Thompson lowered the IRS debt to 8480,000, a movement viewed as a turn in the tide for Steen. Attorney George Abbott, acting as a spokesman for the Steen family, said that Steen has found the present proceedings liveable, live-able, although going under a plan of arrangement for liquidation of assets would have been more attractive. He pointed out that thus far the judgment judg-ment of the trustee respecting re-specting the order of sale of assets has been virtually vir-tually the same as Steen had proposed in the rejected re-jected plan of arrangement. |
