The three local students exhibiting their projects at. BYU's Wilkinson Center last Saturday were Cathy Pink-erton, Pink-erton, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Pinkerton, Tim Taylor, son of Mr. and Mrs. Victor A. Taylor; and Becky Winder, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Evert Winder. These students were among am-ong the first 70 who entered the local Junior High School Science Fair last February 28. About 25 of the original 70 from Moab got to exhibit their projects in the Regional Region-al Science Fair at Price on March 8 and these three got to go to the State Fair this past weekend. Cathy Pinkerton, an 8th grader at Grand County Junior Ju-nior High received a second place medal for her exhibit. Miss Pinkerton constructed a folding screen display of star constellations which showed projected shapes of the Big Dipper and other constellations as they are thought to have been in past history. She also showed representations of the constellation con-stellation Gemini as visualized visual-ized by various astronomers. Miss Pinkerton said she got her inspiration for the project pro-ject after last summer's Girl Scout all-night star study. stu-dy. Her second place medal awarded at the Science Fair last Saturday represented the Earth Science category. Tim Taylor, a 9th grader at Grand County Junior High got third place in the State in the Physical Science Division. Di-vision. His project was a demonstration de-monstration of how sound can be changed into electrical electri-cal energy, and in turn produce pro-duce light. Taylor used a transistor radio for a steady sound source. His system of amplifiers, photoelectric cells and receivers were simplified simplifi-ed models of advanced ideas the practicality of which is , , frmwi """ m t . mc .... vruT XT !"T ' H ''' WVH 'MEpf -"-1 " -:' v : - ;i ( ----- " "'..- I I " ' ' ' ' ........ , f v V.. . Becky Winder, an 8th grader, gra-der, received Honorable Mention at the State Fair in the Division of Earth Science. Her exhibit was a stratigraphic section of the Arches Natonal Monument. It was exhibited on a large free-standing bulletin with plywood backing showing the time scale of historical geology ge-ology and a sample of each of the rocks mounted in cubicles. cu-bicles. Miss Winder's exhibit exhib-it included a map of the Arches and scenes of geologic geol-ogic interest. According to 8th grade science teacher, Mr. Lyn Nelson, and 9th grade science sci-ence teacher, Mr. Robert E.
