Show Major Powell Ceremony Set For June 9th A special commemorative ceremony in honor of Major John Wesley Powell has been scheduled for June 19, 10:30 a.m., on the shore of Lake Powell upstream from Glen Canyon dam. The ceremony, sponsored by the -Riirnnn nf Rprlamatinn and the National Park Service, is held in connection with the National Powell Centennial Cen-tennial Celebration. Governor Calvin Rampton of Utah, Governor Jack Williams Wil-liams of Arizona and chairman chair-man Raymond Nakai of the Navjjp Tribe will all provide pro-vide welcoming remarks. James R. Smith, Assistant Secretary of the Interior for Water and Power, will provide pro-vide the principal address. Floyd E. Dominy, Commissioner Commis-sioner of Reclamation, will also appear on the program, as will a representative of the National Park Service. Master of Ceremonies will be Professor David E. Miller of the Western History Section Sec-tion University of Utah. Highlight of the ceremony will be the unveiling of a plaque to Major Powell, to his river voyage 100 years ago, and to his later accomplishments accom-plishments in the conservation conserva-tion of natural resources. A replica of one of Powell's Pow-ell's 1869 boats that was built for the Walt Disney motion picture "Ten Who Dared" will be on display at the ceremony site. Actual site for the ceremony cere-mony is at a developed overlook ov-erlook along Lakeshore Drive, about two miles fronv Glen Canyon Dam. |
