Show Ranger wins award for Needles service James K. Braggs, Canyon-lands Canyon-lands National Park Ranger was presented with a Special Achievement Award at the monthly staff meeting this week. Braggs, a park ranger at the Needles district, was given giv-en a $200 award by Superintendent Superin-tendent Pete Parry, who cited Braggs for his ability and willingness to assume the duties and responsibilities of District Ranger for a continuous continu-ous period of three months while that position remained unfilled. Although he was not rated as a Supervisory Ranger, he supervised 15 other employees employ-ees and also assumed responsibility respon-sibility for the programming and budgeting operation in the Needles district with excellent ex-cellent results. During this period, he also conducted the highest number of searches and rescues ever recorded in the district during any one period. These were conducted at the highest level of professionalism pro-fessionalism and ended in satisfactory solutions without exceptions. During this time, Braggs performed his regular duties in an outstanding manner. In making the award. Superintendent Sup-erintendent Parry told Jim Braggs, "Beause of your willingness to assume the duties of District Ranger for the peak visitor use period, the district ran smoothly during dur-ing a critical period." Also receiving recognition was Park Aide Marilyne V. Mabery for her suggestion that museum collections utilize uti-lize a photo identification of specimens on their containers. Ms. Mabery implemented this procedure with the historical his-torical and archeological artifacts art-ifacts at the Needles district of Canyonlands National Park and it has proved to be an outstanding improvement in collection management. It has eliminated excess handling of artifacts and greatly assisted in quick location of specimens in the collection. It also provides prov-ides a way for the staff to become familiar with the collection col-lection without jeopardizing the condition of the artifacts. Superintendent Parry extended ex-tended his appreciation for Marilyne's interest in preserving preser-ving thes valuable and fragile specimens. |
