Show good news at the airport Word from the Grand County Commission and Airport Committee Chairman Welby Boyden this week that the State - Aeronautics Division has approved sharing the costs of re-; re-; pairing and improving Canyonlands Field, is good news. Z Although the addition of a new layer of hot mix to the Z runways, repaying of the r-amp and repair work on the ter-I ter-I minal building are not anywhere near what engineers called ; for last summer to completely cure the problems at the field. Z thp tl-irmspnd rln3 pvrrnrtititrp will on a Inner wav tnwpH ; giving air travelers here temporary relief, at least. When the conditions at Canyonlands Field got to such a I point last year that they became hazardous to heavy air- ; craft. Frontier Airlines placed a limitation on use of the field ' which are quite stringent. They cannot use the field when it ; is wet, nor when there are any crosswinds of any force. The - restrictions, which went into effect in January of last winter, I have sharply increased the cancellation rate of Frontier - during the year. Since safety was involved, the decision by Z the airline was impossible to argue with. Z Now, however, with work to get underway in the next - few days to improve the situation. Mr. Boyden says that Fron-Z Fron-Z tier is willing to take another look this time with the idea ; of possibly easing the restrictions if repairs seem adequate. - That sounds fair enough. ; Certainly the work that is now being done is not going - to answer the long-range problem of air facilities in the Moab Z area. But until the question of a permanent solution is ans-; ans-; wered. either by rebuilding the present airport or moving to I a new location, the people of the community need a depend-Z depend-Z able air service from present facilities. |
