Show School Enrollment Shews Dcdino from Spring; More Students Expected During First Week Registration at Grand County's schools began last week with Thursday and Friday set aside specifically spe-cifically as registration f clays. A total of 1.S13 students stu-dents had enrolled by Wednesday of this week, compared to 2,071 students stu-dents who ended the school year last spring. Registration at Southeast South-east Elementary showed 570 students enrolled at that school compared to Gil registered at this time last year. At Helen M. Knight Elementary there were -175 pupils who signed sign-ed up for classes compared compar-ed with 525 a year ago At the Junior High school there were -125 compared with -112 at this time last year. The High School registered re-gistered 373 students as compared to 391 last year. Previous years have proven that pro-registration in the school system does not pick up all students stu-dents in the area and during dur-ing the first week of actual ac-tual classwork, an increase in-crease of as much as 20 per cent can be expected. In analyzing records and files, school officials are certain that well over 100 students are not yet registered reg-istered and that a 10 per cent increase in student stu-dent population would be a conservative estimate. Some small adjustments in class loads will have to be made, it now appears, although it is expected that after the first week of classwork nearly as many students will be enrolled en-rolled as finished the year last spring. These minor shifts in students will probably pro-bably be made after the first week of school when it becomes apparent wlmt changes will be needed. It now seems certain, according to school offi cials, that the kindergarten kindergar-ten children from Moun-tainview Moun-tainview Subdivision, who have in other years attended at-tended Helen M. Knight Elementary, will be bussed bus-sed instead to Southeast Elementary. This will not create a problem, school officials said, since the children are already being be-ing bussed and they would just be taken to a different differ-ent school. The Thompson kindergarten youngsters there are five this year -will also be shifted to Southeast Elementary to provide for a more even balance of class loads. Bus schedules for the first week of school this year will be the same as they were at the end of school last year. The transportation department will be meeting during the next week and will be working out a new schedule sched-ule which will appear in next week's issue of the Times. This schedule will include stops each bus will make as well as the time it will be at each stop. Teachers will begin preschool pre-school briefings Thursday of this week and will cej;-tinue cej;-tinue the workshop thru Friday. A welcome breakfast break-fast will be gven for ail new teachers at 7 :30 a.m. at Pearson's Famly Restaurant, Res-taurant, sponsored by the School Board and the administration. |
