Show again in our area Secretary of interior Stewart Udall . has again visited the Southeastern Utah Scene, visiting the scenic lands surrounding Canyonlands National Park which are- being considered for inclusion under the Sen. Frank E. Moss bill to enlarge Cajiyonlands. This is Mr. Udall's third or fourth visit to our area since he took office seven years ago. Whether or not we agree with many of his policies polic-ies and his politics, it must be admitted that we feel a great deal of admiration for the aggressive manner in which he has conducted himself as Secretary of Interior. In-terior. While many who have held this post during the past half-century have ibeen merely custodians and administrators of the public lands agencies, Secretary Udall has recognized many of the challenges facing Americans in their environment in the 1960's and has sought to deal with those problems. The problem of overcrowding in our national recreation rec-reation areas is a real problem, not one that can be referred to in terms of the future. Mr. Udall has attempted at-tempted to deal with this problem through expansion of the National Park System and recreation area system, sys-tem, and by insisting that new concepts and ideas must be brought to bear in an attempt to cope with a traveling nation overcrowding existing facilities. Under his administratoin we have seen the evolution evo-lution of the Bureau of Land Management from an agency concerned primarily with grazing rights and erosion control on public Lands, to an agency with a many-faceted role as custodian of vast public lands in the west even bringing that agency to the forefront fore-front as a host for vacationing travelers through development de-velopment of recreation areas. Many other changes brought about during the Udall administration will mark this one as a period of innovation. We must applaud the Secretary for his courage to seek a better way even if his methods seem to us at times to be anti-traditional |
