Show Clfy League Basketball Cage Tourney Underway By Danny Price Twin nip and tuck thrillers undecided until the last minute of play, highlighted the opening round of the City League basketball tournament tour-nament Monday night at the junior high gymnasium. Gity Market, playing without with-out scoring ace Jim Cox, dropped a hard fought 50-45 50-45 contest to a surprising Atlas Minerals team in the first game, while LDS ripped rip-ped Millers 66-50 in the second se-cond game and the Eagles completed the first night's activities with a last minute min-ute 46-44 win over TGS No. 1. City Market led throughout through-out the first three quarters and it wasn't until the last minute of play that Atlas took the lead as they picked pick-ed up four crucial free throws in the final 45 seconds sec-onds and pulled away to a 5 point bulge. Ken Hawks led the Atlas attack with 23 points, including in-cluding 2 of the 4 last-minute charity tosses. Lonnie Oliver netted 12 markers for the winners, while Ther-on Ther-on Johnson picked up 14 points for City Market. LDS moved into the winner's win-ner's bracket along with Atlas as they used - their great height advantage to topple Miller's. LDS led from the start and had little trouble clearing clear-ing the offensive and defensive de-fensive boards. Ed McGee paced the LDS quintet with 24 points, as Nielsen and Parkinson finished fin-ished with 17 and 14 points, respectively. Joe Markoff had an outstanding night : for Millers as he netted 21 : points and was the only one in double figures for the losers. In the third game, the Eagles and TGS No. 1 traded the lead throughout the contest as the game end- ed in a standstill at the half 17-17. After 3 quarters the Eagles Ea-gles had taken a 30-26 advantage, ad-vantage, but the game seesawed see-sawed back and forth in the remaining minutes as TGS No. 1 just simply ran out of time in the final seconds and couldn't get off a last ditch shot before the buzzer. buz-zer. Phil Claues led the Eagles onslaught with 14 points, while Ron Garner added 11. Terry Jordan and Butch Buckelman netted' 13 apiece for the losers. The tournament moves into semi-finals tonight with the championship and consolation con-solation games expected to wind up the action on Saturday Sat-urday night. |
