Show Southeast Utah Colorado River Bridqs Takes Top Award The Utah State Department Depart-ment of Highways was in-, formed Monday that its Colorado River arch bridge near Hite has won the American Am-erican Institute of Steel Construction 19G7 award as the most beautiful bridge open to traJfic for til is year. Gov. Calvin L. Ramp-ton Ramp-ton said he was very pleased to learn of this award. Continued the Governor, Go-vernor, "our intent is to build roads into our scenic areas so that they compliment compli-ment rather than detract from the beauty of the country. Tins award is evidence evi-dence of that intent." Mr. John K. Edmonds, Executive Vice President of the Ameiican Institute of Steel Construction said, "In view of the exceptional exception-al quality of the entries and the challenge they pre-, sented to the jury you may feel justly proud of this citation." This structure is situated situat-ed on Utah State Route 95 over the Colorado River Riv-er near the historic Hite, Ferry. The Colorado River Bridge, the Dirty Devil River Bridge atid the White Canyon Bridge form a new road link over the rising waters of Lake Powell. The White Canyon Bridge was the recipient of a similar si-milar award in its class in 19G6. The bridge was designed design-ed by Mr. D. L. Sargent, Engineer for Pre-Construc-tion for the Utah State Department of Highways. The general contractor was the W. W. Clyde Company of Springville, Utah. The bridge was fabricated of steel from the Geneva Works of the United States Steel Corp. by the Western Steel Company of Salt Lake City. The structure was erected by the Steel Erection Company, a subsidiary sub-sidiary of Western Steel Co. The structure is 73S feet in length. The roadway will be 70 feet above the ' -.-f-z- ..4, -4.Hiv?-a'-'' -rte ' ----- - ------- - c This spectacular bridge on Utah Highway 95 near Hite, has won the American Institute of Steel Construction 1967 Award as the most beautiful bridge open to traffic for this year. Design was m high water level of Lake Powell. Nearly two million mil-lion pounds of structural steel were required for this bridge. The new Colorado River Bridge, the Dirty Devil River Bridge, the Cart Creek Bridge near Flawing Flaw-ing Gorge, and the Eagle Canyon Bridge on Interstate Inter-state 70 all utilize a unique uni-que design incorporating hinges at the base and centers of the structures. The Cart Creek Bridge in 1963 and the Eagle Canyon Can-yon Bridge in 1966 were also the recipients of awards aw-ards by the American Institute In-stitute of Steel Construction. Mr. Henry C. Helland, Director of Highways, stated, sta-ted, "This award places the Colorado River Bridge in the bridge "Hall of Fame' which includes such structures as the Golden Gate Bridge in California, the Glen Canyon Bridge in Arizona and the Navarro Navar-ro Narrows Bridge in New York." Mr. Helland added, "the Utah Highway Department De-partment will continue to make every effort to construct con-struct roads to Utah's great scenic attractions lr. a responsible manner consistent con-sistent with the environment environ-ment of this great scenic heritage. by D.
