Show not afraid of it We are in complete agreement with comments of the Utah Dental Association this week in a letter to Moab City Council members, commending them for their consideration of the possibilities of fluoridating' Moab City drinking water. We don't fully subscribe, however, to their strong statement against taking an issue of this nature to the voters. They comment that it is much better to let community com-munity governing bodies make the decision themselves after being advised by professionals, than by leaving the decision up to "an uninformed electorate." Although we- don't have any qualms about letting the Moab City Council decide this issue, and although we feel that it is fully within their authority to do so, we don't consider the electorate to be as "uninformed" and innocent as the professionals believe they are. Residents of Moab City and Grand county have met many issues of a very controversial nature head-on. And in doing so, they have indicated a strong willingness willing-ness to become informed and vote intelligently. We believe be-lieve our people are just as qualified to judge the in- might he circulated by those who arouse passions with scare talk as the members of the City Council are. ' We hope that, in light of the lack of local opposi tion to the proposal, the City Council goes ahead with plans to fluoridate Moab's water. But in the event the issue becomes controversial enough to warrant a public pub-lic airing and election, we have full faith that the people peo-ple of Moab will make an equitable judgment. |
