S Representative In Congress Congre rom from Utah Utah's First District Federal Airport Aid AM When the Federal Airport Act was considered on the floor floor of 01 the House last week 1 I sup supported up- up ported the amendment proposed propos propos- ed by Rep James C. C Davis of ot Georgia which would have a appropriated ap ape million rather than the million requested by the House Interstate and Foreign Commerce Committee My reasons for lor standing behind the million figure are 1 1 General Quesada of the new Federal Aviation Agency stoutly maintains that million is ample and he is the best authority I know to stale state the needs of 01 the Agency 2 million will take care card of ot runways controL tow ers era and necessary safety factors factors fac face tors for lor air transportation In Inthis Inthis this Jet age Construction of some of ot the luxurious terminal al at buildings can wait walt without much hurt 3 The Committee bill called called called call call- ed for lor 80 more employees at a year each Yet the Committee did not ask for lor a report from the Manpower Commission which It should d dunder do under Public Law before enacting such legislation 4 The Committee is unanimously unanimously on record stating that the federal airport co construction construe construe- truc- truc lion tion program is a temporary one and should become entirely entire entire- ly a local responsibility This same Committee recommended 97 91 million more than the AvIation Aviation Av Av- Agency says It needed 5 The Committee recommendation recommendation recommendation is alarming at a time when the US U.S. bonds are going begging when the country's country's country's coun coun- try's credit Is already impaired by the threat of rampant inflation in- in inflation in and by a constantly rising risIng rising ris- ris ing national debt There has got to be a day of reckoning What are we goIng going go go- Ing to do when we cant can't sell government bonds except for interest rates i. i Rep W Wil Colmer ner p- p Miss 1 said that that before talking with the Secretary of the Tre Treasury Trea sury about some of the nations nation's financial problems that he was worried about his grandchildren grandchild grandchild- ren but after talking with the Secretary he told us Now I Iam Iam Iam am worried about myself What worries me Is that many congressmen are now stating openly that since they won the last election by a large majority they consider r this a mandate from the people people peo peo- pIe to spend as much as the traffic will bear At the time Rep Davis submitted submitted sub sut the amendment scaling the appropriation for airports down to the million figure figure figure fig fig- ure it passed by a teller vote of to That showed that the majority on the floor favored favored fay ored the conservative Pary System The Utah delegation has Introduced introduced in In- traduced bills which would assist as ae slat our public land states in m I conserving and developing long neglected state park and recreation recreation atlon areas Our bills bUls would permit the conveyance of public lands to a n state for public park purposes without any litigation as to acreage At the present time i a state or other political subdivision slon sion may acquire only acres yearly This liberalization In the J law w would be especially beneficial to Utah which is more than 70 per cent federally owned and where most of 01 our potential park and recreation areas are arc ort and federal lands and many areas are of at large size As S it Is now the bureau of Land Management has neither the men nor the money to
