Show A Letter to Midge Dear Midge You will think I have gone school crazy but the most amazIng Ing ng feat was observed by me that I just had to tell you about it One day last week I 1 had occasion to go to one of our elementary schools It was just at noon My guide told me where the office was located but added But dont don't be startled by the noise and confusion in the hall I wondered why that remark was made When I arrived at athe atthe atthe the he door of the hall I knew knew knew- tables were set up in the halland halland hall halland and many children were eating They rhey were not rowdy or loud but iut when a bunch of people get together in close quarters there theres Is s always alway noise and here these were vere gi- gi grade gide de school kids Before I made my way past the tables and the children to the office many questions were formed in my mind Why in the hall T Where was the kitchen How many nany were served each noon T How low long did It take Before I could state my errand I had to know enow the answers to these ques- ques ions The principal was busy with the children but he came when he saw me and this Is what I found out Over three hundred and fifty children are served every every ev ev- ery cry day in this hall in less than an hour The food Is cooked In inthe inthe the he kitchen at the other elementary elemen elemen- tary ary school at the same time other cooks are preparing the food for the children of their school chool Three cooks load everything every every- thing Into a paneled truck and andring bring ring It over to this school schoor Inthe In Inthe the he meantime older youngsters have set up the serving tables and nd the folding tables a marvel marvelo to o me the tables and benches are re together and fold down in one operation The cooks unload the food and get ready to serve The he children start coming about 1190 1140 First graders first then thenon on up to sixth grade The children children chil- chil dren ren enter one door are served served go to the tables When they are finished they go out the other door of the hall where the plates are scraped and stacked The custodian helps load the stuff into the truck and away the cooks go to the other school to wash the dishes and get ready for tor another day I have heard a alot alot alot lot for and against hot lunches but this lunch set up is amazing The lunch is well planned and well wen cooked Incredible and It couldn't be done except for the skill and devotion of the efficient ent cook cooky and cooperation of everyone ev ev- everyone concerned Love PEPITA |
