Show THIS THAT and the OTHER by Mack Turner A community can neven get too much help from Its population population tion Lion In making the place one In which to live and make a home After all the home Is the foundation foundation foun dation of a successful city and the key to worthwhile growth Civic clubs fraternal organizations organizations and often strictly social groups play major roles In the growth of a city The wealth de des rived Ived from such groups In healthy numbers Is often found In the good Ideas they produce In their effort to do something worth while Moab has started getting that kind of support from Its citizens after years of struggling along with only the Lions club here hereto hereto to a guide the city toward a big future of bright hopes But It was wasa a pretty heavy load There hasn't been a lot of pro pros progress progress gress to show on the surface of the he new organizations that have Joined the fold But they are getting get gets ting Into position to produce re re- re suits That Is why we think a special salute to one of these groups Is very In order and for two reasons One OM reason Is that this group has lost no time In getting on the ball and without much fanfare fanfare fan fan- fare and with realistic planning have started doing something for forthe forthe forthe the good of the city The other reason Is 19 that this week Is the birthday of the organization organization or or- organization and Its anniversary anniversary anniversary sary week We salute Beta Sigma Phi This sorority Is a non academic and sectarian non-sectarian organization of social cultural and civic nature for tor all wo worthy y young women They have realized there was need for a Jack being put under the feet Moab has been dragging through a golden era and most husbands agree on one thing to wit If the women decide Its timeto timeto time timeto to get something done the men usually find that It gets done It Is a very hopeful sign an and andone andone one which we can expect to see some results In the future We dont don't expect them to tackle any big problems problems like like building a a railroad Into Moab or reduction of taxes taxes but but we can look for fora I a lot of things being done that I the men have too busy to think about And there are plenty of those kind of jobs fobs Just begging to be done e. e Just as Abilene Kansas was the gateway to the west It Is also the birthday of Beta Sigma Phi It was founded by Walter W W. Ross who now has the International International international Inter Inter- national headquarters at Kansas City Missouri and now boasts of members throughout the world The desire to give and receive friendship has been the predominant nant element In the growth of this International organization Membership Is by invitation durIng during during dur dur- ing semi-annual semi rush seasons with the next one here scheduled in October Beta Sigma Phi is known in almost every country in the world with more than active chapters chapters chap chap- in the United States State Canada England Scotland Alaska Hawaii Hawaii Ha Ha- wait Germany Japan Greece Austrilla Australia Finland and the Canal Cana Zone It It has launched some major I projects on a worldwide scale I and is proud of its record 11 It maintains an International endowment endowment endow endow- ment fund supported entirely by voluntary contributions from its members for the benefit of humanity hum hum- anity Cancer research is another great project USA U.S.A. located at is another another another an an- other project supported by this fund The story of how this organization tion got its start In Moab Is another another another an an- other interesting factor It was started by five Beta Sigma who Just seemed to drift together from over as many states in a manner that is typical of the pop pops population of Moab I Each had belonged to a chapter I before moving to Moab and until until un til last December thought there were no other Beta Sigma SlIma in Moab The five were Kaye Stoye of Las Vegas Nev Key Tera Hrbacek Hrbacek cek of Sweetwater Tex Barbara Couch of Nevada Mo Rosemary Kenan of Baxter Springs Kans and the lone Utah member Donna Nelson of Ogden But getting together tog her was the problem and this dame came about In Inmany Inmany inmany many ways The Alpha Epsilon chapter of Moab's history gives the story in this manner Kaye noticed a Beta Sigma Phi sticker sUcker on an automobile seen at various places around town and Inquiring as to the ownership she learned It belong belong- to Tera Tern Fred Stoye noticed the nin Donna was wearing at the theoffice theoffice theoffice office one day and informed Kaye that he had found another one It pays to advertise in The Times Independent and when Kaye Kayo decided to advertise in the naper to see Is she could find iny ny others othe in Moab Barbara Couch was in the newspaper office of lice fice and overheard the conver- conver atlon between Kaye and the ad- ad taker and informed her that she was another That beverage over whim which many great decisions are reached coffee to the uninformed played flayed its role and the united Beta I Sigma reached the decision to form fonn a chapter In Moab They were so pleased at having become become become be be- come acquainted and knew it would be wonderful to meet and become friends with others With much assistance from the international office a number were invited to coffee at the home of Tera Hrbacek and found 14 interested in pledging Rosemary Rosemary Rosemary Rose Rose- mary Kenan was asked to pledge and she Informed the group that she was already a member and became the fifth of the group of veterans The groups group's No 1 project is park playground equipment for forthe forthe forthe the benefit benent of the kiddies and with this worthy project underway underway under under- way we again say It is time for fora a big 21 gun salute to the Beta Sigma Phi Phil Ichabod the office boy says before marriage a man yearns for fora a woman but after marriage the theY I Y V Is silent |
