L Taylor owner of the Times Independent Times Independent although Mr Taylor Isn't aware that mention Is being made of him here Loren Lester Taylor holds the record of having owned a weekly newspaper longer than any other Utahn He Ill took over operation operation opera opera- tion of the Grand Valley Times In October 1911 when the circulation was only about Ills His law in and others had bought the paper at that time from C. C A. A Robertson Later a second weekly the Independent was started but Taylor consolidated them in 1919 and eventually became sole owner L. L L. L Taylor was a grandson of Norman Taylor early pioneer whose picture appears elsewhere in this edition and Laurana Taylor Taylor Tay Tay- lor the Moab valleys valley's first schoolteacher Ills His mother had died when he was 13 13 and at that time he began riding the mall mail from Moab to Cane Springs on the route to Mon- Mon During the time he was operating the Times-Independent Times Taylor served 10 years as city clerk eight years as chairman of the county board and also as chairman of the grazing district board He Ile was urged to run for state representative before he was old enough to vote and later was asked to run for the state senate He Ill supported the move to have the Arches area declared a national monument and is credited with helping obtain obtain obtain ob ob- tain funds to build a road into that area Long aware of the scenic possibilities of the Moab area Taylor worked for 10 years to have a II movie made here First picture filmed in this area It Is recalled was Wagons West with John Ford Since then many others have been made in this vicinity Taylor was a member of the Big Six oil company which struck oil In the mid He Ill aided in establishment of the Grand County hospital and served as superintendent superintend superintend- ent of that institution without pay Taylor gave up active operation of the paper about four years ago and earlier this year leased It to H. H R. R Holliday Taylor now lives In semi-retirement semi in Salt Lake City and is a member of the Utah industrial com com- mission |
