Show Randolph Stewart First Bishop of Moab Was Pioneer All His Life First L. L D. D S. S bishop of Moab was Randolph H. H Stewart Bishop Stewart came here in 1881 when there still were only about 16 families in the little Grand Valley settlement But pioneering was an old story to him even then Randolph Stewart was born in North Carolina July 20 1834 When the Mormons started across the great American desert in 1847 the Stewart family was in the second party Randolph then 13 drove an ox team across the plains to Salt Lake City While he was in his teens the records show he lived In northern Utah and southern southern south south- south south-I ern Idaho He lie still was a young man when he was named bishop over a ward in Rich I county The ward and later the town were I named Randolph In his honor Bishop Stewart remained in Randolph unI until until un un- til tit 1879 1870 when he moved to Huntington in Emery county Little more than a year later I he was designated bishop of oC Moab and moved here In 1881 Mr Stewart continued as bishop of ot Moab ward for Cor 17 years said an account written at the time of ot his death on Nov 29 1909 lie He had much to do with its early development development development develop develop- ment and reclamation At one time he owned almost all of oC the present town He Ile was always generous to a fault however and practically gave away all of the property but his homestead which he still owned at his death |
