Show la Sol Sal Forest Has I Best Fire Record Reports from the 24 forests of the intermountain regIon of the forest serVIce indicate that the 1943 fIre season IS over Up to November 1 there have been fIres m in the forests this year as compared wIth during 1942 The area burned IS like likewise WIse reduced to acres as compared wIth 55 Of these 5 5 fIres or 29 per cent were man caused The nine natIonal forests of Utah had a total of fIres WhICh burned over 1037 acres SIXty fIve of these fues Lii es were caused by lightning and the bal balance balance ance of 73 or 52 per cent were caused by human carelessnEss The La Sal hid the best record wIth but one fIre which was caused by lightning and only two acres burned over The Wa Wasatch Wasatch satch had the most fIres 45 of which 71 per cent were man caused and the most acreage burned acres In commenting on the 1943 fire season RegIonal Forester C CN CN N Woods said It ft IS very gnat grat dying to note that our fIre rec record ord shows definite e ement ment this year as compared wIth last year both In number of fires and m in acres burned The number of lightning fIres IS be beyond beyond yond our control but the re reduced reduced number of man caused fires indicates that the people of the region are becoming more fire conSCIOUS and careful The small acreage burned this year IS gratify gratifying mg ing as we have had to use In inexperienced experienced suppressIOn crews for the most part Much credit IS due the women who have fIlled a number of lookout po positions very efficIently to the I parachute Jumpers who contrib contributed materially to the good record of the Idaho forests and to the forest fIre fIghters ser serVIce service VIce and other cooperators who have helped on fIre suppressIOn throughout the regIOn |
