Show desert dust by johnston Johns too mr hoovers acceptance speech that we have been hearing about for the past month has ben delivered some of mr hoovers admirers claim that his speech will go down in history as one of the greatest speeches ever delivered some democratic newspaper editors say that it was the most feeble speech that they ever beard they say that any fourth rate country lawyer could have made a better one without any preparation there Is no use of anyone being carried away with any politicians speech they are just speeches prepared to tit the minds of the majority of the people both the republicans and democrats are doing a lot of fiddling with this prohibition question that question should cot be a political issue they both seem to be m favor of doing away with prohibition hibi tion so why not let it go at that and take up some of the more vital subjects it does not seem possible that the public minds are narrow and fickle enough that they want to listen to this prohibition prattle until november mr hoover has told the people that he has one shoulder that Is as wet as an oregon fog and the other one is as dry as the great salt desert so that should be fair enough you can take the one that suits you he says that he and his party has successfully piloted the country through the worst crisis ever known that Is a great help to the public to know that the crisis has past he says that be has saved the tanner the farmer has lost everything he had except his soul if mr hoover has saved that for him it is certainly fine of him he says he favors a protective tariff we know that the public has been protected from the smoke and poisonous fumes of fifteen hundred factories that have moved into canada since the smoot hawley bill was passed saying nothing about the forty five factories that have moved to europe and the obnoxious scent that would have come from thousands of those filthy working men in about another week we will be gin to hear from the democrats no j doubt they will take off on prohibition from the start As everything that has happened in the past three years has been the worst or greatest in the history of the nation this promises to i be the mud campaign in I 1 history the papers tell us that times are getting better the politicians call our attention to the rise in stocks they try to give us the idea that prosperity Is just around the comer in the middle of next week now when one of these politicians tells you that prosperity Is in sight while the producer is producing at a loss eight or ten mallon laborers unemployed over half of the factories and mines closed two thirds of the small businesses broke the world trade at a standstill he Is just a common ordinary liar or a fool for the want of a little common ense there is no doubt about the conditions improving but it will take time there is no bunch of republicans or democrats going to snap us out of this in a week or ten days we are just like the old cow pony that has outlived his usefulness and been kicked out on the deat in the fall of the year we will just have to build to the salt sage and imagine the sunshine and green feed ahead if we can just make the winter |
