Show SAN JUAN PEOPLE ARE DIVIDED ONs QUESTION A delegation of san juan county stockmen stoc kmen headed by charles redd former state legislator called on governor george H dern friday afternoon to renew their plea that the diute piute strip be added to the navajo indian reservation an opposition delegation headed by representative benjamin D black of blanding met with the governor at the same tim and presented their arguments against releasing the tract to the indians mr redd contended that if the which lies between the san juan river and the state line be added to the reservation the indians can be prevented from encroaching upon the grazing land north of the river representative black held that the indians aoud not be ejected from the north side of the river and that re of the diute piute strip would not relieve the situation governor dern gave no intimation of his position in the dispute pointing out that he wanted to find out how the state might be effected in case of the discovery of ou on the strip As public domain which the disputed territory now Is the state would receive a share of any oil which might be discovered there Is some question as to whether this would be true in case the strip Is made a part of the indian reservation transfer of the strip would of course require action of the united states congress but the recommendation of the governor would probably carry considerable weight |
