| Show TO GIRL KILLED accidentally WHEN RIFLE discharges MErLO deplorable RABLE TRAGEDY AT LA SAL TAKES LIFE OF LEAT LEATRICE nICE THREE YEAR OLD DAUGHTER JF RANGER AND MRS S COOPER SMITH L one of the most deplorable tragedies that has ever occurred in southeastern utah took place saturday evening at la sal when leatrice the three bear 3 earold ear old daughter of forest ranger and mrs S 8 cooper smith was instantly killed by the accidental discharge of a rifle mews news of the accident created a profound shock to the hundreds of friends of the family throughout southeastern utah and the sincere sympathy of all goes out to the grief stricken parents the tragedy occurred at about 6 30 saturday evening in front of the la sal store banger ranger smith had returned to his station at old la sal sai at 3 30 in the afternoon following a trip over the forest it happened to be the fourth wedding anniversary of mr wr and mrs smith and they decided to go on a rabbit hunt and picnic they drove to the la sal store tor for some groceries mr and mrs smith went into the store leaving their two children in the car with dean thompson 14 year old brother of mrs smith who was visiting them ranger smith came out of the store with an armload of groceries A 33 22 calli bre savage rifle was in the car and mr smith asked the boy to move the gun to make room for his parcels on the floor the little girl was sitting on her uncles lap the boy reached I 1 out to move the gun and in some unaccountable way it discharged the bullet entered the little girl girls s body just below the right breast emerged just above the left breast an and d then shattered a rear glass of the car the ball penetrated the heart and death resulted instantly the prostrated parents immediately started for moab with the child hoping against hope that her wound was not as serious as they feared and that there might be a chance to save h her er life A phone call to moab advised dr I 1 W alien allen of the accident and he started at once on the la sal road to meet them the doctor met the I 1 smith car at the head of moab valley I 1 but an examination of the wound I 1 showed that the little girl had died instantaneously the body was brought on to moab and funeral services were held from the L D S chapel monday forenoon A large number of relatives and friends from outside points were in attendance in addition to hundreds of moab friends of the family many beautiful floral tributes attested the esteem in which the smiths are held and the keen sympathy felt by the community in their bereavement the services were most impressive a feature being a number of beautiful musical selections the speakers were E F thompson of blanding father i of mrs smith bishop W 0 smith of snowflake ariz a brother of mr smith supervisor A C folster W R mcconkle and wayne IL I L redd of blanding anding BI president of the san juan stake the musical numbers consisted of the following quartet shine on by mr and mrs john mrs john E F shafer and bishop W 1 D hammond duet I 1 let the little children come mrs W D hammond and mrs john F shafer vocal solo sometime well understand 11 holmes smith of logan vocal solo sweet little rose bud mrs reed somerville Somer vUle abide with me choir the invocation was pronounced inca by C L christensen and the benediction given by reed somerville the little girl was a few days over three years of age she was bom july 22 1926 among the out of town relatives and friends who came to moab tor for the funeral were mr and mrs E F thompson of blanding parents of mrs smith and their four sons wallace max dean and francis mrs smith of logan mother of ranger smith his three brothers holmes smith of logan M W smith and wife we of hyrum utah and bishop W C smith and wife of snowflake ariz mr and mrs W J nix of blanding and president and mrs wayne H redd of WOM A large delegation of la sal friends attended the funeral practically every family of that community being represented here miss grayce goudelock left today lor for iowa where she will accept pt a position as a dramatic C coach lor for high schools miss aou goudelock delock Is s graduate of a school of dramatic wt at kansas city registration days this year tor for the city ty and town elections are on octo bei w esth lath and the alth la is the last date tor for tiling ming candidates 1 talons t petitions of those desiring to w run tor for office in tha the primaries oust contain the dignat ur es of at least I 1 hundred qualified el electors ec tors and no candidate tor for election to office may tac spend tor for campaign purposes a cum sum lual mul to more than 15 per cent of one aws es salary of the position tor for which ht nete is ruBn ruml lag las |
