Show A GREAT SPEECH daily sentinel grand junction we hope that every reader of the sentinel interested in the affairs of his or her country and in the welfare of community life reads the text of the brief speech which president hoover delivered yesterday at the annual luncheon of the associated pres and which speech was published in full in yesterdays sentinel it was as mr hoover la belled it a frank statement of what he considered the dominant issue before the american people in spite of the efforts that naturally will be made by some of the professional dry leaders and workers it was not in any sense of the word a speech made merely in behalf of prohibition or for the enforcement of prohibition laws alone mr hoover made this very plain in urging respect for and operation cooperation co in the enforce ment and obedience to the laws of the united states both federal and state and which necessity he considers the most vital question now before the people the prohibition question is to use his own language but one segment of our problem the president after declaring that the one force that holds our civilization together is law stated that he wanted it understood plainly that he was not just talking of the merits or de merits of a particular law but of all law pointing out that more than human beings are lawlessly killed every year in the umed states and that less than one sixth of these slayers are convicted mr hoover declared that times as many people in proportion to population are lawlessly killed in the states as in great antian strong indeed were his sentences regarding the tendency for disrespect for all law and startling and convincing indeed were the facts and figures that he recited to back up his contentions in the course ot this brief address it was made plain by the president that he has no toleration for dramatic raids and violent attacks staged in order to make headlines and he also administered a hard blow to those prohibition officers and others who VIOLATE the law themselves in order to DETECT violation when he declared that it is NOT the purpose of the federal administration to strengthen law enforce ment by violating the law itself through misuse of the law in its enforcement consistently reasonably earnestly and we believe ly the new president of the united states speaking to the representatives senta tives of the some two thousand daily papers that hold membership in the associated press justified his contention that the dominant issue before the american people is the enforcement and the obedience of ALL laws his plea to the press to systematically demand and support the reorganization of our law enforcement machinery federal state and local so that camo may be reduced will in our opinion not go unheeded in our opinion the brief address of herbert hoover delivered yesterday at the associated press meeting was the greatest the most convincing and certainly the most vigorous speech long or short that this great man has delivered at any time since he entered on an official career it was a powerful supplication to the american people to either obey or repeal laws and to give the nation a better name in her dealing with crime in all of crimes disreputable deviations and miserable ramifications |
