Show GRANTED HOOVER devils garden and the windows 10 miles north of moab set aside as government park area comprises acres the wonderful scenic region ten miles north of moab known locally as the windows and the devils garden has been set apart as a national monument and will hereafter be under the care of the united states government an associated press dispatch on monday announced that president hoover had on that issued a proclamation creating the park the new reserve will be known as the arches national monument the new national monument the first to be designated in grand county and the second in eastern utah is a rugged district located about 15 miles south of thompsons Thomp sons and 10 miles north of moab it consists of two tracts known as the devils garden and the windows and contains about acres canous examples of wind erosion are found there taking the form of arches natural bridges and other unique wind worn sandstone formations the area has been declared the most wonderful example of ind erosion to be found on the north amen can continent ili the moab thompsons road passes within five miles of the ri park but at the present time no road into the district is available it is possible however to drive a car within two erthree or three miles of 1 the windows and it is expected that an automobile highway hi to the monument will soon be built B A movement to have the district converted into a national n monument has been under way for several years probably the first person to urge the creation of the new park was prof larry he M gould of the university of michigan who visited the district d a number of years ago and was struck by the v wonderful ond erful scenic features to be found there he wrote senator reed smoot a nume her of times suggesting that the area be con arted into a nation ij i j al monument and senator smoot took the matter up with the in tenor department the department sent several representatives to the devils garden to make an examination of the district and their reports were all favorable the presidential id tion issued monday is the result with the construction of a few miles of road the new national monument will become easily accessible to automobile tourists and undoubtedly will soon gain fame as one of the most unique scenic regions of the west e the action of the government in creating the new monument will be pleasing news to the people of moab and grand county as it will go a long ways toward bringing the local scenic attractions to the attention they deserve s |
