Show history textbooks largely responsible for international enmities DEAN W P ruseell columbia university the history textbooks of many countries are bleeders breeders bre eders of international enmities it is ray impression that there is about as much hatred about as much suspicion just about as much desire for war as there was m the days before the world war one cannot go from one country to another in europe asia or the amentas without becoming impressed with the fact that not only the working people not only the military but people like you and me spend much of their time ing in bate for their neighbors the teaching of history under an international code which would be equally acceptable to all nations is an impossibility the history textbooks must be acceptable to the american legion and the daughters of the american revolution in all countries we must permit old faa boned patriotism in each country all we can insist upon is that there be no slurs against other people in the historic 1 and that when a na tion like ours derives definite benefits from the culture and resource of other nations we give credit for what they have contributed |
