Show recently the times independent published an article telling of an address made at salt lake city by professor G E P climith of the university of arizona who severely condemned california s stand on the colorado river project professor smith declared that the boulder dam project as proposed by the swing johnson bill should never be authorized for three reasons namely first that the treaty with mexico would have to be amended second that the dewey dam will have to be built as a means Dt regulating the flow into the lower basin and third that parts of the santa fe compact must be modified As a substitute for the boulder dam project professor smith urged that flood control dam be built the upper colorado river at dewey twenty five miles above moab we are this week in receipt of a letter from T E altson of mentone calif replying to professor smiths criticism of the boulder dam project mr kitson formerly resided in grand county making his home in castle valley a few miles below dewey the site of the dam proposed by the arizona professor mr klasons views on the subject are as follows anent mr smiths deviea damsite that would help some to regulate the flow of the river but would serve no other purpose as I 1 see lafor it Is too far from any power market to warrant putting in a plant that would utilize the power that could be developed at such a dam As for arizona they would prefer to see a dam about two hundred miles upstream from the boulder site that would let them cover a large area of land that would be missed by the boulder dam but the upper site would be out of reach of california entirely because of the cutup cut up condition of the land between the upper site and the california line the same condition would exist with california and arizona both if the dam were built at dewey prom that site the flow would when released go right down where it now goes but in order that arizona and california either may gt g t more than they now get the water must be raised out of the deep canyon before 11 can be used by either state As to mr smiths three reasons mentioned the first regarding the treaty with mexico I 1 know of no such reason as to case cither dam were built the results with mexico would be the same second the dewey dam would not regulate the flow into the lower basin my more than would the boulder dam third reason forget it now as to california needing the water there Is th greatest need here for more water not in los angeles alone but in the whole san I 1 and los angeles valleys there are within a radius of miles of los angeles no less than fifty towns and cities with populations ranging from five to forty thousand each besides half of that territory Is cut into small farms of from one to five acres with a family on each tract on top of the increasing demand for domestic water each year lessening the amount for irrigation the farmers are forced to sink wells and pump the water walh a lift of six hundred feet and the water flow annually goes lower that Is why we need more water and more power one must live here a number of years to really understand the conditions mr smith probably has not had the privilege anyway he talks like a power trust employee yours truly T E |
