| Show CALLEO OFF GAME STATE department WANTS TO CO OPERATE WITH MOAB PEOPLE IN t FISH AND GAME MATTERS recently the times independent published an article protesting against we termed the wholesale extermination of beaver along the colorado river one of the knappers tn appers engaged m beaver yesterday gave us the following communication wherein he explains the reasons for the being conducted against the beaver and we are publishing it herewith moab utah march 2 to the editor in a recent issue of your paper iou referred to the trapping of beaver on the gutend river and expressed some fears to all the beaver being exterminated you further stated that you understood such animals were to be trapped anly in places where they were doing damage As I 1 have done some trapping in this locality I 1 wish to advise you and the readers of your valuable paper that you are quite ight in stating that beavers are to be trapped or exter only where they lare doing damage such are my instructions both given to me by the state fish and game mr madsen as well tea being printed on my permit to trap 1 I might add that I 1 have only trapped 23 beavers the area from camp no 2 to moab a distance of 21 miles there considerable number of beavers still in that area my plan has been just thin them out a little for las athey increase m numbers they balove into the small side streams cheru they do considerable damage I 1 might further add that I 1 am here naw to move my clamps and work farther up the river according to instructions very respectfully JOHN GALLOWAY the times independent has no desire to engage m a with any one about the trapping of beaver m the colorado we still fell to see wherein the beaver can possibly do any damage in the river canyon and cannot quite understand der stand the sentence in the foregoing letter which states the animals are being trapped only where they are doing damage can it be that they getting so numerous along the river that they are gnawing down the oil well derricks we know of no other property on the river below can possibly ba of any value we are pleased to report that as a result of publicity given by this paper to the matter of trapping beaver the campaign against them is to be stopped at least in the vicinity of moab in a lone distance telephone conversation with the editor of the times independent this D H madsen state fish and game commissioner stater that he had ordered that all trapping of beaver falong the colorado nver be stopped he further stated that it was his desire to cooperate with local citizens and sportsmen on all fish and matters and would be pleased to have them advise with him on matter affecting this section of the state mr mad en said that he intended to visit this vear to himself ath local conditions in the furfure he said the state fish and game department will be guided by the recommendations of local people m iha matter of trapping beaver to th end that the best interests of the state aitay be served |
