| Show LARGE SUM FOR CONGRESS PLANS SPENDING MILLION DOLLARS IN prospecting IN CRESCENT DISTRICT AND an appropriation of one million dollars to be spent in prospecting for potash in the crescent district grand county and elsewhere in the west 13 proposed by a bill now before congress which it is reported will probably be approved before the adjournment of the present session the presence of high potash values in the salt drilled in the crescent eagle well has been investigated by government engineers and there is no question but that the government will thoroughly prospect the field by core drilling the crescent salt is said to have a potash content of from 36 to 38 per cent while the highest potash content received in potash wells drilling in texas is between 6 and 7 per cent the following dispatch from washington thursday tells of the congressional action on the potash appropriation pria tion measure the house on mines and mining today ordered a favorable report on the hudspeth bill authorizing an appropriation of one million dollars to be expended by the geological survey in determining the locution loce tion and extent of potash depos its in the united states an amendment was made to the bill providing that where the survey dall on pr bately owned lands and discloses the presence of potash the owner of the land shall reimburse the government for the cost of drilling if no potash as found the government stands the expense as it does with reference to drilling on public lands this bill is particularly applicable to lands in the vicinity of crescent in grand county utah and to lands in several other states another amend maent requires the survey upon completion of drilling in any given locality to issue a report showing the extent of the deposits found end the cost of drilling the senate last night passed a bill authorizing the secretary of the interior to grant two year permits for prospecting for potash on the public domain and to grant leases wherever potash is discovered senator king objected to the bill on principle opposing the leasing system but senator jones sponsoring the bill showed that in on other way can potash be developed the bill already has passed the bouse |
