Show h A MOAR BO WHO MADE GOOD moab was honored last week by the visit of a native son who left his home town a number of ears ago to carve out a career in the united states ai my through his natural intelligence his desire to absorb knowledge and his conscientious attention to duty he has already made good although he is still a boy low in his twenties lieutenant john J williams was a baby when several moab men including the writer were grown men and we still consider ourselves oung duang the past SIK years he has completed the full course given at the united states military academy at west point he has completed the full course for army aviators at kelley field texas and at both schools acquitted himself with the greatest honors since being assigned to the air service about a year ago he has won his spurs and is today commander of a pursuit group of twenty planes stationed at field michigan last year he and two companions were chosen as the official representatives of the united states air forces at the sesquicentennial exposition at Philadel aphia and only recently he and a number of other army flyers were delegated to escort lindbergh the transatlantic aviator on his trip to canada although he selected one of the most difficult branches of the army for his lifes work john williams in the space of a few short ears has justified the most optimistic hopes and expectations of his parents and friends moab is an infinitesimal spot on the map of the united states but it ranks rather highly ton the U S air map as a result of the splendid record made by this from moab it is a wonderful thing to see a boy leave hone go out into the world and make good john williams has done this and we glory in his success moab is proud of him president announcement that he does not choose to become a candidate to succeed himself in 1928 has set the tongues of a nation to wagging while it is interesting and perhaps fascinating to speculate upon the various interpretations that may be put upon his utterance the fair thing to do is to accept it at its face value as a declaration of an honest and sincere man that he has no present desire to enter the turmoil of a struggle for the presidential nomination that he can have the nomination if he desires it goes without saying his four deais in office have been as freighted with good to the united states as any administration in history that he could b elected is as certain as anything can be when a year or more must elapse before the accomplishment of the fact mr coolidge presents to the world the spectacle of renunciation of certain continuance in the most powerful office in any democracy of the day the continued and persistent showings of oil and gas eing encountered in wells now drilling in southeastern utah show to a certainty one thing that somewhere in this region lies one or more oil pools success is assuredly going to crown the efforts of those companies continue their exploration activities and make a really earnest attempt to solve the geological problem js which the district presents whether this year or next year or a decade hence southeastern utah will become an important oil producing region and we claim to be neither geologist nor prophet |
