I MAKE AN AQUARIUM AQUARIUM ITS IT'S EASY SAYS DAN BEARD II Dan Beard is national Boy Scout commissioner commissioner com corn missioner of ot America He has spent his life in work In the interest of boys and andras andras andras ras written many books about them This is the first of six stories on Summer Summer Summer Sum mer Stunts for Boys written by him By DAN BEARD National Boy Scout Commissioner These are the days when all all boys think of building and stocking an aquarium To my mind there Is more fun to the square inch in gathering specimens specimens sped sped- mens to stock block an aquarium than there is Isn jn tn almost any other form of collect collect- ing All AU your our specimens are caught alive and none of them suffer If It you ou are careful In collecting moths and butterflies butterflies butterflies butter butter- flies you have to kill the dainty creatures creatures crea crea- tures to be able to keep them then and In collecting collecting col col- col- col birds' birds eggs you have to rob the poor mother bird of at least one onet of ot her treasures and doubtless make her feel mighty unhappy JUST LIKE A SCOW The Tha simplest and to my mind best form torm of ot aquarium is the land and water aquarium built according to the diagram above Make a veritable scow about five or six feet long This can be done by cutting two boards into the shape of sled runners Fig 1 1 Set these side pieces four tour feet apart and nail two temporary crosspieces on to hold them In position while putting on the bottom Fig 2 See that the bottom boards fit snugly to together ether and after they are aTe all on it is well to give the outside of the bottom a coating of ot hot tar I Get tar from the towns town's roofer rooter heat It In an old tin can over a wood fire in the back yard and smear it on with a mop of or rags ras tied to a stick This done dig a hole for the trough trough- like tank in the shadiest spot in the back backyard backyard yard ard and after aCter placing the tank pack the earth well around it Then get some sand rocks and gravel vel avoid salty seashore seashore seashore sea sea- shore sand and cover th the bottom of ot the tank building a picturesque little c 1 II 7 r cloa h r e r. r l D' D 1 1 I 1 d 1 W J WJ 2 I r. r I.
