| Show r I A I Good Music Uplifting I HE recent musical memory test or contest in t 1 1 the public schools of Salt Lake was s so successful successful suc suc- c and gratifying in every respect that i it t would seem that such tests with witha a goodly list of prizes as an added indu inducement ement should be held heldi i at frequent intervals and adopted as a permanent permanent permanent perma- perma nent plan for the uplift not only of the pupils I who participate and of all other school children 4 but of the general public L There are lre some who might vigorously and conscientiously dispute the theory that syncopated music music commonly known as jazz has a tendency tendency tendency ten ten- dency to lower the morals of those who enjoy that form of sound either for the dance or otherwise otherwise other other- wise but there are few who will den deny the assertion asser asser- tion tion that perfect harmony either vocal or in instrumental i mental has a tendency to uplift the moral tone of f the hearers It might be denied too by those who relish jazz that a recent test at the New York zoological cal cal park proves nothing This test which was attended by scientists from Columbia university and nd the American museum of natural history f i caused aused the monkeys to scamper to hiding places I f the lions to jump to their feet with fur bristling l J the elephants to tremble with rage and a hippopotamus hippo- hippo r. r to dive into the tank and remain submerged sub sub- merged until the quintet of expert musicians had eased ceased to rag raJ When Home Sweet Home and other othe r melodious tunes were played the monkeys returned returned re re- turned turned and renewed their accustomed antics th the e lions quieted down the elephants resumed their normal behavior and the hippopotamus ambled I Ir r out of its tank Human beings generally are regarded as the thell ll highest form of animal life and if the nerves of the lower forms are affected by harmony and it would appear plausible that the human nerves would be affected even to a greater extent At t any rate no one ev ever r was harmed by byH H glistening listening ri to to the st strains ains of Home Ho e Sweet Home Homer r i or similar rhythmic melodies |
