II I The Slacker ListO List I of the Utah department of the O OFFICIALS American legion favor the publication of the slacker list as compiled by the war department after it has been closely checked with the state records A wide divergence of opinion has attended at attended attended at- at tended this question throughout the country and considerable criticism has been heaped upon congress congress congress con con- gress for the order to print the list in the Congressional Congressional Congressional Con Con- gressional Record The main objection to publication of the list has been based on the possibility of errors branding loyal citizens as slackers A number of these cases have already been uncovered i One man who served as a colonel through th the war was included In n the list A New York man mal has brought suit for damages against the government government government gov gov- for branding him a draft evader In proposing a recheck with the r records cords on file in the state capitol the Utah department of the legion hopes to ov overcome these dangers Since the list has been released by the government government government govern govern- ment the publication of the names in the various states is essential to complete justice If the names of any innocent men are included in the list it is far better that the mistakes be uncovered I Inow now than to let the names go down in the archives of the nation unquestioned I Complete te publication of the list in the various various various va va- rious states of the Union is the only means byr by r which the reliability of the list can be determined deter deter- mined The innocent member is likely to suffer more by permitting the imputation to go unchallenged unchallenged unchallenged un un- challenged than if the list is published now anc and mistakes corrected as far as possible by a proper defense of the charge In a measure this is the view of the Utah department of of the American Ameri Ameri- can legion
