Add to this his acknowledged business ability and his keen sense of values and it is easily understood why he is almost in-variably successful in business or other matters. We feel that it is our duty to call the attention of our readers to these worth while character-istics of Forrest Cumberledge and to pay him a well deserved tribute for his straightforward business methods and for the un-selfish interest he has shown in public welfare. o Alice Madsen, owner and opera-tor of the Ace Mercantile Co. Her business ability plus a thorough knowledge and long experience in the Mercantile business have been major factors in maintaining the Ace Mercan-tile Co. in a prominent position in the business life of the city. She has not only in her business activities but also in her atten-tion to civic duty assumed an active part in community affairs. Mrs. Madsen has always been ready and willing to contribute his time and energy to the pro-motion of any . project which pro-mises to benefit the community as a whole. She has often sacri-ficed her personal interests to be of assistance to the city. Her ef-forts are deserving of commen-dation and support. We congratulate Alice Madsen on her past successes and predict that the future will bring her Mill greater success. . Barthel, owner and operator of the Murray Home Furnishing Co., located at 4598 Doxelder, in Murray, is one of those men who has given much toward the development of Mur-ray and its environs. He has turned his personal success in the business field to the advan-tage of the people as a whole and has accomplished much towards making his city a better place in which to live. Mr. Barthel's thorough know-- , ledge of the many technical pha-ses of the upholstering business has raised him to a position of leadership in his field of activi-ties, and gained for him recog-nition as one of Murray's more progressive business men. We compliment Fritz Barthel in this review and wish to offer him this small evidence of public es-teem. ' O LEWIS E. KNOWLDEN Mr. Lewis E. Knowlden, owner and operator of the Elite Clean-ers &c Dyers, located at 1770 W. 3500 So., has won the universal respect and good will of the peo-ple of Murray and the surround-ing country for the progressive manner in which he has kept his firm in the forefront of the busi-ness life of this entire district. Also for the efficient and friend-ly willingness he has displayed in accepting his share of respon-sibility in aiding civic projects. Mr. Knowlden is not the kind of a man who makes himself con-spicuous by the manner in which he conducts himself, either in business or other matters. Yet his quiet reserve and air of confid-ence mark him as a man of sound judgment whose opinions and advice on cleaning and dyeing are sought after and listened to with respect. We compliment Lewis Knowl-den for his successful manage-ment of the Elite Cleaners & Dyers, also for his constructive advice and help on "those civic affairs in which he has found time to interest himself. He is a man whom many are proud to call friend. O fa ' 1 ABE GUSS Murray has assumed its place of importance in the intermoun-tai- n area, because of the efforts of far-seei- business men who have developed the agricultural and natural resources, or in some manner extended the trade ad-vantages, of the locality. One of the men who has taken an im-portant part in many progressive movements is Mr. Abe Guss, the owner and manager of the Granite Meat & Livestock Co., located at 500 E. 5600 So. in Murray. Mr. Guss has devoted a great deal of his time and energy to the growth and development of the Murray trade area, and it is fitting at this time that we at-tempt to express in some small way our appreciation for his un-selfish contributions to the gen-eral welfare of the community. His many friends admire and , respect in him those virtues that promote confidence and Inspire good will. His upright business methods are but an outward re-flection of his inherent appreci-ation for fair practices. THORNELL and MIKE PERRY Murray owes much to those progressive citizens who have taken an active part in the growth and progress of the city and who have helped to make it the business center for this part of the intermountain area. In mentioning some of these men it is only fair to include J. B. Thornell and Mike Perry, own-ers and operators of the B & W her city and this district. Miss Peterson is keeping her Salon at the forefront at all tim-es and by using the most modern equipment and the newer and more popular methods of beauty culture, she has maintained a position of leadership in her field cf endeavor. Capable and ener-getic in the management of the business she has come to be rec-ognized as one of Murray's more progressive business women. What Blossom Peterson and her beauty salon have accom-plished in the past is the best in-dication of what may be expect-ed of them in the future. She has our admiration and best wishes for continued success. BUD ANDERTON Bud Anderton has proved his progressiveness by constantly adding to and increasing the service which his Conoco Ser-vice Station located at State & Vine in Murray, has rendered to the public. The large volume of business handled by his service station proves that "service to him is not just a "word but something to be rendered to the people to the fullest extent of his ability. m In addition to his close atten-tion to his business affairs, Mr. Anderton was never a man to dodge his civic responsibilities and his help in those matters has always been cheerfully given. He fully appreciates the value of good will and has more than his share of that intangible com-modity because of the manner in which he meets both business and civic obligations. He is a credit to the community and is thoroughly established in the forefront of the business and civic life of the city. Bud Anderton has many friends in and around Murray and it is a pleasure to bring him before cur readers in this review of progressive business men. It is because of this duty that the Dimond Coal & Feed Co. has earned a reputation for reliability second to none. Mr. Dimond is also civic mind-ed and has always been ready to contribute his time and energy to any plan which promises to benefit the entire district. And the people of Murray may regard with particular satisfaction the many services which he has per-formed for the community in the interest of progress and civic betterment. We urge our readers to look to S. R. Dimond as a progressive business man of whom we may well be proud. His devotion to his city has been constant and his achievements well merited. We wish for him further success. O , Milk Depot St Cafe, whose out-- , standing knowledge of their business, backed up by their many years of experience, has brought them to the forefront in their particular field. They deserve a great deal of credit for their success in both business and civic activities. Their main interests have always been devoted to the welfare and building up of a greater Murray end they have contributed more than their share towards that end. Thornell and Perry are wholly deserving of our sincere praise and these few words of commen-dation are but a just recognition for the many activities they have conducted on behalf of the gen-eral welfare of the community. We trust Mike Perry and J. B. Thornell shall continue to serve Murray and vicinity for many years. making this statement the man we have in mind is Mr. Art Johnson, owner and operator ol the Central Auto & Salvage Co., located at 4280 So. State in Mur-ray. He has a wide circle of per-sonal friends and customers scat-tered throughout this entire dis-trict, many of whom reside in our own community. Mr. Johnson's contagious op-timism and freely expressed be-lief in the assured future pros-perity of the people of Murray and its metropolitan trading area are characteristics which are to be appreciated in a progressive business man. He has always ta-ken an interest in community affairs and has shown a willing-ness to shoulder his share of the civic load. It is men like Art Johnson who, because of the successful conduct of their business and private af-fairs and their willingness to contribute lo the public good, are wholly deserving of a few words of commendation. It is a pleasure to pay him this brief tribute. o Murray who have gained recog-nition for their progressiveness and a well known insurance man who belongs in this category is Mr. Ralph P. Smith, district man-ager of the Farmer's Insurance Group. Mr. Smith is well established in the forefront of the business and civic life of his city. He is an aggressive person, yet one whose genial personality has earned for him and the Farmer's Insurance Group, a host of friends and policy holders in his territory. The ethical manner in which he has conducted his busi-ness affairs is but just one of the reasons for his outstanding suc-cess. And aside from his business activities he has accepted his share of responsibility in aiding civic projects. As a result of the combined efforts of men like him Murray is firmly established in the minds of the people as the logical busi-ness center for this section. We congratulate Ralph Smith for his success in business and public affairs and trust he will continue for many years to en-joy that success which he has so justly earned. WILLARD NYGREN Logically a man who has earn-ed the reputation of being one of Murray's more progressive grocers would, in doing so, have; tamed the friendship and good will of a great many people throughout this entire district. A man who justly deserves that dis7 tinction is modest, efficient, friendly Willard Nygren, man-ager of the Cut Rate Grocery, located at 4500 S. State in Mur-ray. Mr. Nygren is the type of a man who would be an asset to any community, not only be-cause the successful conduct of his business plays a definite part in the general civic scheme; but because the ultimate measure of his value to his city and this dis-trict lies in the fact that he is untiringly zealous and remark-ably successful in the promotion of civic progress. It would be hard to estimate the actual dollars and cents value of men like this to their com-munity. We congratulate Murray for numbering among its more progressive citizens such a man as Will Nygren and we also ex-press the wish that he will enjoy many more years of success and prosperity. II. W. HARR In paying tribute to some of the more progressive business men of Murray we-- would be re-miss in our duty should we fail to include Mr. H. W. Harr, own-er and operator of Bud's Auto-motive Service, located at 4773 S. State in Murray, whose busi-ness ability is no greater than the "Know-how- " and mechanical skill which has contributed to his well-earne-d success. He is a man who has contrib-uted generously to the welfare of his city and the community for many miles around. His civic spirit is evidenced by the many services which he has performed and continues to perform in the interest of the people as a whole. No worthwhile enterprise which promises to benefit the commu-nity escapes his attention. Bud Harr is a man of wide ac-quaintance, whose many friends admire and respect in him those virtues which inspire confidence 'end promote good feeling. His upright business methods are a credit to his inherent sense of fair play. A community is for-tunate to number among its citi-zens a man of this type. We congratulate Mr. Harr on his splendid record of service and trust he shall continue to assist us for many years to come. j LYNN CIIIVERALL In singling out some of the more progressive business men of Murray, we would be censor-ed should we fail to include Mr. Lynn Chiverall, who has had long experience in the automo-bile repair and maintenance field and is the owner and operator of the auto repair firm bearing his name located at 4795 S. State (rear) in Murray. Mr. Chiverall has always been conscious of his civic responsi-bilities and ready and willing to meet in every detail those op-portunities which come to his attention to further civic enter-prise. He may well be proud of his achievements along these lines. Lynn Chiverall also deserves a great deal of credit for the hon-est and successful manner in which he has conducted his busi-ness affairs. He is a friendly, lik-able personality whose sincere desire to be of service has gain-ed for him a host of friends and acquaintances in and around Murray, who would if given the opportunity, join us in wishing him many more years of contin-ued success. O RAY CHRISTENSEN In compiling this review of progressive Murray business peo-ple, we have endeavored to se-lect those citizens who, by the manner in which they have con-ducted themselves and their bus-inesses, have caused the public to spot in them, certain qualities over and above the average. Such a man is Mr. Ray Christen-se- n, owner and manager of the Beehive Biscuit C,, who is well! known to many of our readers ' because he has many friends throughout the intermountain area. Mr. Christcnsen's main inter-ests have not been solely con-fined to his own business and private affairs, but have also in-cluded his contributions, in one form or another to those pro-jects of a civic nature which come within the scope of his ac-tivities. He never neglects these obligations. Ray Christensen is a man of wide experience whose exploits in the business and civic life of Murray and vicinity merit more than passing attention and this writer is privileged to pay this brief tribute to a man who well deserves more credit than is ac-corded him here. o A. F. BELL Recognized as one of the more progressive business men of Murray, Mr. A. F. Bell, owner and manager of the Bell Paint Co., dealers In Paint, Wall Paper and glass, performs a real ser-vice for the people of the Mur-ray trade territory and his many contributions to civic betterment are too well known to require repetition in these columns. His personal success has been turned to the advantage of his fellow citizens and he is always ready to assist any enterprise which promises to advance the welfare of the community. Mr. Bell is deserving of praise and this small tribute is but a just .recognition for the many services which he has performed in the way of both business and civic activities. His reputation for the successful conduct of his business affairs is no greater than his reputation for the hon-est practices which characterize every transaction. We congratulate A. F. Bell on his splendid record and trust he shall continue to serve the peo-ple of Murray aond vicinity. FRANK BILLS Our issue today proposes to call the attention of our readers to some of those progressive and civic minded people who have contributed their share of time and energy to the building up of Murray and the surrounding trade area to the position of pro-minence which it enjoys at pres-ent. One of the men to whom we wish to call the attention of our readers is Mr. Frank Bills who has a thorough knowledge of the auto body repair business and is owner and operator of the Frank Bills Auto Body Shop. He is a business man who has never spar-ed himself in his aggressive march forward and one whose competitors respect as much as do all others with whom he comes in contact. Frank Bills is at all times con-scious of his civic responsibili-ties and may be depended upon to meet in every detail the many opportunities which present themselves to be of service to his city. Mr. Bills' record of achieve-ment is one of which he may well be proud. His value to his city and this district is an es-tablished fact and we hasten to give him the credit which is justly due. O NORMAN J. JOHNSTON It is appropriate that we in-clude in this review of progres-sive Murray business men, Mr. Norman J. Johnston, manager of the Brookfield Products Co. Inc. He not only has the reputation ot being progressive but also the added one of being a willing sup- porter of many community af-fairs. Aside from his business activi-ties Mr. Johnston has always shown an interest in the civic betterment and progress of his city and has backed up his in- terest by his contributions to many projects which have bene-fited Murray and the surround-ing area. He is a good and loyal citizen and the full measure of his loyalty is most apparent be-cause of his willingness to aid community activities. His help along these lines has made of Norman Johnston a fine example of the type of man we all appreciate. We congratulate and extend to him, on behalf of all citizens interested in better business and civic progress sin- cere appreciation for his contri- - ofuti,ns t0 the general welfare Murray and vicinity. G. S. MALOUF We wish in this edition, to pay tribute to Mr. G. S. Malouf, man-ager of the Duce Sporting Goods Co., located at 3650 S. State in Murray, for his many services to the sportsmen of the Murray trade area, and his splendid re-cord of achievement in the busi-ness life of the city. Mr. Malouf probably has as wide a circle of friends as any other man we could name because he is just naturally the kind of a man who makes friends with al-most everybody and is at pains to conduct himself in such a man-ner as to deserve the respect and good will of all sportsmen who do business with him. A city is fortunate in being able to num-ber among its more progressive citizens business men of this type. He is also always ready and willing to lend his support to the promotion of any project which promises to benefit this entire district. He may be depended upon and his services to the peo- - Ele are too many in number to described here. It is suffic-ient to say that we consider G. S. Malouf an asset to the com-munity and a progressive busi-ness man of whom Murray may be proud. MAC EWELL In mentioning some of those men who are taking a progres-sive part in the evolution of the business and civic life of Murray we would be censored if we fail-ed to include Mr. Mac Ewell, a well known Plumbing and Heat-ing contractor and owner of the Ewell Plumbing it Heating Co., located at 4185 S. 7 E. in Murray. Mr. Ewell is that solid type of citizen whose fairness and friend-liness and sincere desire to be of service are accountable for a large measure of his success. As time goes on his personal inter-ests have become more closely interwoven with the business and civic affairs of the city. As a re-sult, he has, quite naturally, be-come accepted as a man who can be called upon and who will cheerfully do his part to further the development of those com-munity activities to which he is best fitted to lend assistance. Mac Ewell has, by the conduct of his business and his attention to civic affairs, earned the friend-ship and good will of his fellow citizens. He is to be compliment-ed for his activities and we only express the desire of his many friends and associates in wish-ing him continued success. o L. II. CRAIG Mr. L. H. Craig, owner and operator of the L. H. Craig Gar-age, located at 3210 W. 3500 So. in Murray, is one of those pro-gressive business men who has always done his bit to maintain the prestige of Murray as the leading trading center for our area. He has always worked for the development of Murray and his many services are worthy of sincere appreciation. Mr. Craig has proven himself worthy of extended mention and these few words are not really pdequate ' recognition for the many services which he has per-formed in the promotion of pub-lic welfare. His well-earne- d suc-cess as a garage opreator is easily understood, knowing as the peo-ple do his widespread reputation for the honesty which character-izes all of his business dealings. It is a combination of technical - knowledge, mechanical skill and business ability which have ele-vated L. H. Craig to a position of leadership in the auto repair field. He Is completely aware of his civic responsibilities and is wide awake to the many opportuni-ties for service and always ready and willing to lend his support to any project which promises to benefit the community as a whole. We compliment Mr. Craig on his accomplishments and sin-cerely wish for his continued success. ROBERT A. DENT To be a consistent and persist- ent booster of the home commu-nity often takes courage and plenty of optimism. It is because ot his unfailing faith in the fu- ture of Murray and the surround-ing country, and his unflagging efforts to promote its develop- ment, that Mr. Robert A. Dent owner and operator of Bob's Cafe ocated at 4794 S. Mr. Allen is well known and has many friends and customers throughout this entire district ALICE MADSEN A city grows and prospers by reason of the public spirited men and women who take an active interest in its development. Salt Lake City has its share of these progressive and civic minded people and one who is deserving of recognition is friendly, likable FRITZ A.
