| Show Scrap Drive Has Just Begun T THE people of Salt Sait Lake City have done a pretty good job on the home scrap metal collection drive Latest reports indicate the goal of 2300 tons which amounts to pounds per per family will be exceeded by about tons That's not bad but bad but it is only the beginning beginning begin begin- ning rung in the scrap metal drive for Utah and for that matter for Salt Lake City We haven't begun gun to exhaust our possibilities for scrap collection Right here in the city for instance there are many tons of scrap still It ill to be salvaged particularly in the downtown area We have by no means cleaned out all the potential scrap crap from commercial establishments There is 18 a job to be done by the business men inca and property owners of the city in this respect Incidentally it might be a good idea if our building and fire inspectors kept the scrap metal drive in mind as they made their rounds A still bigger job awaits us in the industrial industrial industrial indus indus- trial salvage end of the scrap drive It is here Utah must look for at least 60 per cent of its scrap scrap if it we are arc to reach our to ton goal by the end of the year So far we haven't been doing too well Ingathering in ingathering ingathering gathering up this industrial scrap Fortunately most of the difficulties that have plagued the industrial salvage effort have been recognized and efforts are being made to solve them One of the biggest problems on industrial salvage has been the question of who was going to pay salvage costs It has long been standard practice in industry to carry carryon on salVage salvage salvage sal sal- vage operations which were profitable Buta But a a. great deal of industrial scrap s salvage costs more than the scrap can be sold for Somebody Somebody Somebody Some Some- body has to pay the difference if our industrial industrial indus indus- trial scrap drive is to be successful Now it seems that problem will be solved by having having hav hay ing log an industry give the government title to the scrap then government agencies will move and sell it Another problem was man power equipment equipment equip equip- ment and transportation all transportation aIl all pretty hard to find these days That too is being solved The W P A is all set to cooperate in the salvage program providing the trucks the cutting and hoisting equipment and the labor to bring in bulky industrial scrap items The army also has has' agreed to cooperate to the limit of its ability Lastly there has been the problem of cooperation cooperation cooperation co co- co- co operation of industry and coordinated authoritative authoritative authoritative direction of the program Industry hasn't been so much unwilling to cooperate as so preoccupied with war production activity and so short on man power in many instances that it was difficult for it to cooperate Industry Industry Industry In In- must be impressed however with the fact that scrap collection is a vital phase of the war effort and must rank equally with War production Each business must therefore therefore therefore there there- fore appoint one man with full fun authority to direct scrap salvage and cooperate with the authorities in the collection program That cooperation will be encouraged by the new streamlined direction of the industrial salvage salvage salvage sal sal- vage program which is now being established There is one other important phase of the scrap program That is special salvage projects such such things as digging up abandoned street car tracks in Salt Lake City removing old bridges tearing down buildings etc These are projects which may involve legal tangles costly wrecking jobs etc They require special special cial dat handling and the government is arranging arranging ing lag to do these salvage jobs jobs' under a special program So far weve we've been a little slow in this industria industrial industrial in in- salvage effort But difficulties are arenow arenow arenow now being ironed out and were we're about s set t to gather up Jp many thousands of tons of industrial industrial industrial indus indus- trial scrap in Utah Weve We've got to move fast however and weve we've got to have the fullest cooperation of everyone concerned if were we're going to do the job b before fore snow and cold weather buries the scrap blocks roads and slows up the whole scrap collection effort until spring |
